Yvonne Chamness Fires a Score of 5 Under to Hold the Lead After Round 1 at Tapatio Springs
TAPATIO SPRINGS –The 11th annual Women’s Stroke Play was kicked off Thursday morning at Tapatio Springs Resort. The first round ended with Yvonne Chamness out of Austin, Texas leading the field with a score of 67.
Chamness built her 4-stroke lead with a total of 6 birdies, 3 on the front and 3 on the back. “I started off hot with a lot of close shots in the first 5-6 holes and made a couple putts,” Chamness said.
With a relatively attackable course layout, Chamness took advantage of short iron shots into the greens.
Yvonnes reflected on her back nine stating, “As the day went on, the round got harder, the wind picked up, and the back nine is a lot tighter”. With wind gusts up to 24 mph and a consistent 14 mph wind that started at noon, the course was indeed playing harder.
A couple holes playing dead into the wind, likely devise a different strategy compared to the calm practice rounds demonstrated Chamness composure.
Staying “patient but also aggressive” was a key piece of her game plan that helped her seal her lead in the first round. Going into tomorrow, one must expect her to keep this same plan and keep trekking forward.
Moving on to our Lower Mid-Amateur Division, Meghan Moake and Courtney Dow are atop the leaderboard after shooting 77s.
This puts them one stroke ahead of the rest of the field, indicating a tight battle going into round two.
As for our Flight Divisions, Patthawan Livingston leads flight one with a 6-stroke lead, Sally Forbes and Lisa Papes lead flight after firing 84s, and Dora Gonzalez has a solo lead in flight 3.
Today’s yardage for the Championship Division was played at 6,150 yards and the Flight yardage was played at 5,316 yards.
Round 2 of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship starts on Saturday at 8:00 am.
