Two Tied for The Lead Heading into the Final Round
“Moving day” took place during the second round of the South Mid-Amateur Championship, presented by Club Champion. John Hunter and Barrett Sandefur see themselves atop a crowded leader board after day two at Austin’s Grey Rock Golf Club. Three players, including defending champion David Pocknall, are one stroke behind Hunter and Sandefur heading into Sunday.
Hunter, of Houston, was able to card five birdies and three bogies en route to his second round 2-under par 70. After opening the championship with a first round 3-over par 75, he will enter the final round tied at 1-over par 145. Grey Rock member Sandefur, who held the lead after round one, could only record three birdies during his second round 4-over par 76. After and opening round of 3-under par 69, Sandefur will also enter the final round at 1-over par 145.
Three players sit only one stroke back at 2-over par 146, including Austin’s Joe Bendetti, Katy’s David Pocknall and Bob Kearney, of Houston. Pocknall, who won last year’s South Mid-Amateur Championship at Club at Sonterra in San Antonio, fired a second round even par 72. Bendetti finished his second round at 2-over par 74, and Kearney posted a 3-over par 75.
With a crowded leader board, the final round should shape up to be a fantastic finish for the title of South Mid-Amateur champion. Play will begin once again with tee times starting at 8:00AM off of holes #1 and #10.
