South Team Wins Jackie Burke Cup
BROWNWOOD – The South Team wins the Jackie Burke Cup for a second consecutive year with a 27-21 victory at The Hideout Golf Club & Resort.
The Jackie Burke Cup is a team match play event modeled after the Ryder Cup. Each team features 12 players as North Texas takes on South Texas. Each match is worth two points and the team with the most points after Sunday will win the cup.
The Hideout Golf Club & Resort is located in Brownwood, Texas and is hosting the Jackie Burke Cup Matches for the first time. The par-72 layout challenges the players as they must manage their way through the Hill Country terrain. The course joins a stellar list of clubs to have hosted the Jackie Burke Cup including Whispering Pines Golf Club, Champions Golf Club, Brookhollow Country Club, Spanish Oaks Golf Club, Miramont Golf Club, Escondido Golf and Lake Club and The Clubs at Houston Oaks.
Trailing 8-16 heading into the Singles Matches on Sunday, the North Team started the day strong and jumped out an early lead in 9 matches. Over the course of the day though, the South Team was able to chip away and end up winning the 5 matches needed to clinch the cup. San Antonio’s Matt Pawly secured the clinching points for the South Team with a 3&2 win over Aidan Dortch in Match 22. Pawly secured six total points for the South Team over the weekend in his first appearance at the Jackie Burke Cup. Pawly was the only player for either team to finish the weekend with a 3-0-0 record. Eleven other players finished the weekend at a 2-1-0 record.
This is the South Team’s second consecutive victory at the Jackie Burke Cup, after breaking a 7-year drought at Willow Brook Country Club last fall. With the victory, the South Team now ties the overall record with the North Team at 9 wins a piece. This year’s Jackie Burke Cup featured 16 first time participants.
Sunday’s temperatures began in the low 30s to start the day and then in the high 50s later in the afternoon. Winds were a little stronger on the second day, ranging around 10 miles per hour.
Along with the Jackie Burke Cup going to the South Team, players of the year were announced. Austin’s Trenton Mierl was the Boys 15-18 Player of the Year, while Dallas’s Adrienne Ahn won Girls 12-18 Player of the Year and Dallas’s Jack Clancy received the Boys 14 & Under Player of the Year. Tyler’s Sidney Robertson was named the 2022 James A. Ragan Sportsman of the year.
