Sosa started quickly with two birdies on his first four holes. A bogey late on his front nine would cause him to make the turn at 1-under for the day.
He was able to keep his momentum going by making a couple of clutch par saves on holes 10 and 11 after blowing both of his drives way right. He then birdied the next three holes and closed out his round with a birdie on the 18thto shoot a final round 5-under 67.
Sosa recently learned that giving up is not an option.
“I won the Cameron McCormick AJGA tournament a few weeks ago at the Rawls course in Lubbock after starting the final round nine shots off the lead,” said the high school freshman. “That experience definitely helped me here and helped me believe that anything is possible.”
Lake Jackson’s Jacob Borow finished in second at 6-under after a final round 3-over 75.
Austin’s Thomas Bockholt III, a Rice University commit, shot a final round 3-under 69 to secure himself in a tie for third with Austin’s Cole Sherwood, a Vanderbilt commit, at a 5-under tournament total.
Fort Worth’s Brandon Massey, who won the 2017 Texas Cup Invitational, finished in fifth at 4-under-par.
Logan Diomede of Argyle shot a bogey-free, final-round 5-under-par 67 to work himself inside the top ten at a tie for sixth.
Jacob Sosa’s name will be alongside 1967 and 1969 champion Ben Crenshaw, a two-time Masters champion, the 1980 champion Jeff Maggert, a 3-time PGA Tour champion, and 1981 champion Scott Verplank, a 5-time PGA Tour champion as a Texas Junior Amateur champion.
