Regional Amateurs Set for Aug. 8-10

Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls and The Woodlands Country Club’s West Course in The Woodlands will be the host venues for the North Regional Amateur and South Regional Amateur, respectively. The championships are scheduled to be played concurrently from Aug. 8-10 and will conclude the 2025 regional season.

Established in 1914, Wichita Falls Country Club is one of the oldest clubs in the Panhandle Plains region. Following several revisions throughout its history, the course was completely renovated and redesigned in 2008 by D. A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard. The West Course at The Woodlands Country Club was originally designed by Joe Lee and Robert von Hagge and opened in 1975. Jay Morrish & Associates supervised an extensive course remodel project in 1999 which included reshaping and rebuilding tees, bunkers, and putting greens.

First played in 2003, Regional Amateur entries are open to male amateur golfers who have an up-to-date WHS™ Handicap Index not exceeding 8.4 issued through a member club of the TGA and reside in the region relative to their respective championship. The delineation between the North and South regions is the 31st parallel that passes through the city of Salado.

Both championships are conducted using the same competitive format. The starting field of 84 players will play 54 holes of individual stroke play over three days with no cut. The top three finishers and ties receive automatic exemptions into the 2026 Texas Amateur. Additionally, the top two mid-amateur (ages 25 and older) finishers and ties earn exemptions into this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US to be held from Sept. 5-7 on the Cypress Creek Course at Champions Golf Club in Houston.

Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds of both championships will be posted on the TGA website no later than Aug. 5. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Wichita Falls Country Club and The Woodlands Country Club.

At the 2024 championships, Rob Couture of Celina won the North Regional Amateur for a second time with rounds of 67-72-64 at Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater. His 7-under-par 203 total was good for a two-stroke margin of victory over Hunter Wolfinger of Richardson. Couture captured his first North Regional Amateur in 2009 at Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington, during a torrid stretch in which he also won four consecutive North Regional Mid-Amateur titles from 2007-2010. Jackson Hymer of San Antonio birdied the second playoff hole to win the South Regional Amateur over Alex Malanga of The Woodlands at Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi. The two players were tied at 14-under 202 at the end of 54 holes of regulation play.
