Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater and Corpus Christi Country Club in Corpus Christi will be the host sites for the North Regional Amateur and South Regional Amateur, respectively. The championships are scheduled to be played concurrently from Aug. 9-11 and will conclude the 2024 regional season.
Located about 15 miles west of Longview on State Highway 135, Tempest Golf Club (formerly known as Southern Hills Golf Club) opened in 2018 following a multi-million-dollar overhaul of the previous layout led by Jeffrey Brauer. Corpus Christi Country Club was founded in 1922 and moved to its current location on Everhart Road in 1963 with an 18-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The course was renovated by Chet Williams in 2021 to fortify the strategic elements of Jones’s original design.
First played in 2003, Regional Amateur entries are open to male amateur golfers who have an up-to-date World Handicap System Index® not exceeding 8.4 issued through a member club of the TGA and reside in the region relative to their respective championship. The delineation between the North and South regions is the 31st parallel that passes through the city of Salado.
Both championships are conducted using the same competitive format. The starting field of 84 players will play 54 holes of individual stroke play over three days with no cut. The top three finishers and ties receive automatic exemptions into the 2025 Texas Amateur. Additionally, the top two mid-amateur (ages 25 and older) finishers and ties earn exemptions into this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US to be held Sept. 6-8 at Denton Country Club in Argyle.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds of both championships will be posted on the TGA website no later than Aug. 6. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Tempest Golf Club and Corpus Christi Country Club.
At the 2023 championships, Andrew Chow of Coppell won the North Regional Amateur with rounds of 68-69-72 at Thorntree Golf Club in DeSoto. His 7-under-par 209 total was good for a one-stroke margin of victory over Brandon Shong of Wylie. Terrin Anderson of Montgomery carded rounds of 65-73-71 at The Wilderness Golf Club in Lake Jackson to capture the South Regional Amateur. Anderson finished at 7-under 209 and two strokes ahead of runner-up Jonathan Kim of Cedar Park.
