North Texas Classic set for September 6-7 at Cedar Crest Golf Course
The Legends Junior Tour will open its September schedule with the North Texas Classic, set for Sept. 6-7 at the historic Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas. The 120-player field will compete across three divisions in one of the final tune-ups before Player of the Year honors and Jackie Burke Cup selections are finalized.
“We are excited to return to Cedar Crest Golf Course for another Legends Junior Tour event,” said Tournament Coordinator Preston Vinzant. “They have been phenomenal hosts in the past for the LJT and TGA. Just last year the Spring Preview was held here, and the players loved it. It provides a strong challenge for players while also incorporating some great golf history.”
Cedar Crest Golf Course, originally established as Cedar Crest Country Club in 1919 and designed by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast, holds a distinguished place in Texas golf history. It hosted the 1927 PGA Championship, making it the first — and still only — Dallas site of a men’s major championship.
After the original club folded during the Great Depression, the City of Dallas acquired the course in 1946 and converted it into a public facility. Cedar Crest has since hosted a number of significant tournaments. To preserve and modernize the facility, the city invested in several renovations, including a $2 million clubhouse in 2001 and a 2004 course update by former Tour professional D.A. Weibring and architect Steve Wolfard, all while maintaining Tillinghast’s original vision.
The par-70 layout stretches more than 6,500 yards from the back tees, featuring rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering and skyline views of downtown Dallas. With multiple tee boxes, it remains accessible to golfers of all skill levels while still testing advanced players.
Beyond its design and affordability, Cedar Crest is a community anchor. Initiatives like the I Am a Golfer Foundation, led by general manager Ira Molayo, bring youth programs, internships and scholarships to local kids, using golf as a tool for empowerment and growth. In 2023, the course also unveiled Legends Plaza, featuring sculptures of Walter Hagen and Charlie Sifford, linking its storied past with a forward-looking community vision.
A big part of Cedar Crest Golf Course is the I AM a Golfer Foundation. The foundation is committed to being a catalyst for community renewal and transformation in southern Dallas by delivering impactful programming, preserving the historic Cedar Crest Golf Course, and promoting inclusive access to the game of golf for youth and families. Through the junior golf program, they have introduced over 2,000 local kids to the sport, offering meaningful instruction and life-shaping experiences. The paid internship program has provided high school and college young adults with hands on, career-building opportunities, while the scholarship initiative has awarded over $400,000 in college support to 46 deserving students. The North Texas Classic will be split into three divisions: Boys, Girls, and Boys 14 & Under. The Boys champion will earn exemptions into the Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational, 2026 Texas Cup Invitational, 27th Veritex Bank Byron Nelson Junior Championship and the 100th Texas Junior Amateur. The Girls Division champion will secure spots in the Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational and 2026 Texas Girls’ Invitational, while the Boys 14 & Under winner will also advance to the Invitational.
Including the North Texas Classic, just four LJT events remain before the Player of the Year Points List determines teams for the Jackie Burke Cup, along with divisional Player of the Year honors. William Mangione of Austin leads the Boys Division, Plano’s Eileen Lee tops the Girls Division and Gunter’s Austin Anderson holds the edge in the Boys 14 & Under Division.
At the 2024 North Texas Classic, held at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Duncanville’s Daniel Ferguson claimed the Boys Division title with an eagle on his final hole to finish 3-under 72-69. It was the first LJT victory for the now-Dallas Baptist University golfer. In the Girls Division, Dallas’ Adrienne Ahn secured the win with a birdie on the final hole, finishing 74-71 for a 1-over total. Declan Dent capped a strong season by capturing the Boys 14 & Under Division title with a 2-under 71-71.
The opening round of the 2025 North Texas Classic will begin Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. with a single tee start off No. 1.
