North Team Takes Huge Lead at Jackie Burke Cup
Wichita Falls – The North Squad won nine of 12 matches on Saturday to take a 21-3 lead over the South Squad in the Jackie Burke Cup Matches at Wichita Falls Country Club.
Briefly: The North came into this year having won or retained the Jackie Burke Cup the last five years. The team wasted no time in 2019, winning three of the first six matches in the morning and all six in the afternoon. The North Squad hasn’t lost a single match this year and will look to eclipse the most points scored in the Jackie Burke Cup on Sunday. The record is 32 points by the North Team at Miramont Country Club in 2008.

Four-Ball Matches: Michael Heidelbaugh of Dallas teamed up with Dallas Hankamer of Temple to win 8 & 6 in the first match of the day. The duo started off with a win on No. 1 and were 2-up heading to the par-5 sixth before winning six of the next seven holes to clinch a dominant victory and secure the first two points for the North. Henry Frizzell of Frisco and Brian Boles of Lubbock won their match 1-up after making a birdie on the 16th to take a lead and making par on the final two holes to hold on. The third match of the day finished with a tie as Zachary Kingsland and Shaheen Momin won the first point for the South Team. Matthew Comegys and Kevin Watts won their match and the third of the day for the North Squad which stretched its lead out to 7-1. The final two matches finished tied and the teams went into the Foursome matches with the North leading 9-3.
Foursome Matches: Henry Frizzell and Brian Boles won their second match of the day for the North Squad with a 2 & 1 victory in the afternoon. Gaven Lane and Michael Heidelbaugh teamed up to win the second match 2-up, while Matthew Comegys and Dallas Hankamer won 2 & 1, Brody Hanley and Kevin Watts won 3 & 1, Andrew Petruzzelli and Ben Delarosa won 5 & 4 and Estelle Seon and Gabbi Bentancourt won 2 & 1.
Host Club: Wichita Falls Country Club is hosting the Jackie Burke Cup Matches for the first time in the event’s 15-year history. The club opened in 1914 and was redesigned by Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design in 2008. The course features narrow fairways along with elevated greens that are rolling well this weekend.
Jackie Burke Cup History: The Jackie Burke Cup is the season-ending event for the Legends Junior Tour and based off the Ryder Cup. The top 12 players from South Texas face off against the top 12 players from North Texas based on the LJT Player of the Year Standings. The tournament features three rounds of match play with players competing in Four-ball matches, Foursome matches and Singles matches.
Event History: The North has won or retained the Jackie Burke Cup each of the last five years and has brought the overall series even at 7-7. Grace Do is the captain of the North Squad, while Annika Clark is the captain of the South Squad. Both players competed with the Legends Junior Tour and then competed collegiately at Texas Christian University.
Weather: The weather was near perfect for the first day of the Jackie Burke Cup matches. Temperatures were low in the morning as the first round saw a 30-minute frost delay, but the sun came out and the winds stayed down as players enjoyed some birdie-making weather.
What’s Next: The final round of the Jackie Burke Cup features Singles matches on Sunday, Nov. 10. Tee times are scheduled to start at 7:30 am off the No. 1 tee at Wichita Falls Country Club.
