Member Club Spotlight: The Wilderness at Lake Jackson

Ask any group of golfers what they love about the game, and they’ll be able to rattle off a dozen or more answers without even thinking about it. While everyone has their own unique reasons for why they enjoy playing golf, a common inspiration for many, regardless of how well they score, is the opportunity to get outdoors, spend time with family and friends, and just unwind.

One of the best ways to combine a relaxing round while experiencing Texas in all its natural splendor is by taking a trip to The Wilderness at Lake Jackson. Located in southern Brazoria County, just 10 miles north of the Gulf Coast, there may be no better place where golf and the great outdoors are intertwined than at this aptly named Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary golf course.

Opened in 2004, The Wilderness was designed by award-winning architect Jeffrey Brauer. The golf course, which is bordered by the Brazos River and three wildlife sanctuaries, covers more than 230 acres and offers a sense of seclusion and harmony with nature.

Brauer, who also designed other Texas favorites like Cowboys Golf Club, Tempest, and Tangle Ridge, took full advantage of the native surroundings to create an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind golf experience. The scenic course features holes that weave through and around hardwood forests, streams, marshes, and protected wetlands, with large contoured green complexes guarded by deep-faced bunkers.

With seven sets of tees ranging in length from 7,018 yards to 5,273 yards, the par-72 layout is a wonderful test for golfers of all ages and skill levels. With the nearby wildlife management areas that are home to a diversity of coastal wildlife, including birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as butterflies and dragonflies, a round at The Wilderness will feel like a stroll through a private nature preserve.

Professionally managed by KemperSports, The Wilderness’ other amenities are centered around a rustic log cabin-style clubhouse and include a driving range, short-game practice area, pro shop, restaurant, and outdoor pavilion.

The Wilderness at Lake Jackson has established itself as one of the premier public golf courses in the state and this summer will host the South Amateur from August 4-6. It’s the first time a Texas Golf Association championship will be played at The Wilderness and the club is eager to be in the competitive spotlight and welcome the region’s best amateur golfers.
