Loftin Leads After Second Round of 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational
Krysta Loftin of Pearland surged to the top of a talented leaderboard Sunday, taking control after the second round of the 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational and positioning herself in an ideal spot for the final round.
The Class of 2026 standout shot a 1-over-par 73 in demanding conditions to build a two-stroke lead heading into Monday’s final round. With steady play and timely birdies, Loftin separated herself from a field tested all day by gusting winds.
Loftin’s day began earlier than most. After her the first round was suspended due to darkness Saturday, she returned Sunday morning to complete her final two holes before a quick turnaround for her second round.
After closing out her opening round at 1 over, she stepped back to the first tee knowing another 18 holes awaited on a course growing increasingly difficult as winds intensified.
Her second round began with a double bogey on No. 1 — the toughest hole on the course Sunday — but Loftin responded like a veteran. She bounced back immediately with a birdie on No. 2, regaining the stroke and settling into rhythm.
From there, the Pearland native showcased patience and discipline, stringing together pars from Nos. 3 through 16. With crosswinds swirling and gusts reaching 25 mph, simply holding position became a challenge across the course. Loftin avoided big numbers and kept herself firmly in contention.
The closing stretch provided late drama. On the par-3 17th, she missed the green short, leaving a delicate up-and-down on a sloping surface. Her putt from just off the green rolled across the contours and stopped about 5 feet away. The par attempt narrowly slid by, resulting in a bogey and setting up a pivotal finishing hole.
Loftin responded under pressure once again.
On the par-4 18th, she drove the ball confidently down the right side of the fairway, setting up an ideal approach. Her second shot settled roughly 5 feet past the hole on a downhill line. This time, she converted, draining the birdie putt to close the round with momentum and extend her lead.
The two-time winner on STPGA Prestige Tour in 2025 will now look to capture her first Legends Junior Tour major title before joining the Houston Christian University women’s golf program this summer. A victory Monday would add another significant milestone to an already impressive junior career.
Carolyn Liu of Katy sits in second place after carding a 5-over 77 in the second round. The Class of 2028 standout remains within striking distance and has shown the ability to make a run.
Natalie Nobles of Navasota climbed into contention with one of the day’s strongest rounds, a 72, moving to 5 over for the tournament and three shots off the lead. The Class of 2028 player chipped in for birdie on her final hole, an exclamation point that could provide valuable momentum heading into the final 18 holes.
Dresden Bounds of San Antonio, an Oklahoma State women’s golf commit, stands in fourth at 6 over after a second-round 78. The senior remains six shots back and well within range if she can post a low number Monday.
Adrielle Miller of McKinney rounds out the top five at 7 over after a steady 2-over 74.
While course conditions were drier Sunday, Mother Nature continued to shape the championship. Sustained winds between 15 and 17 mph greeted players in the morning, with gusts reaching 25 mph throughout the day. Tee shots into headwinds and approach shots battling crosswinds forced competitors to remain creative and committed on nearly every hole.
Following the second round, the field was cut to the low 34 players, all of whom will compete in Monday’s final round.
The Texas Girls’ Invitational has long been a proving ground for elite talent. Past champions include Texas Longhorns golfer Farrah O’Keefe (2022), currently ranked No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking; professional golfer Hailey Jones, a two-time winner in 2016 and 2019; and Tillie Claggett, the 2021 champion and currently ranked No. 91 in WAGR.
Significant exemptions await the champion, including entry into the 2027 Texas Girls’ Invitational, the 2026 Bluebonnet Championship, the 2026 George Hannon Junior Invitational, the 2026 Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational and the historic 100th Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf Shops.
The final round of the 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational begins at 8 a.m. Monday off the No. 1 tee, where a deep field will chase Loftin in what promises to be a compelling finish.
