Joshua Irving of Fort Worth leads North Amateur
PROSPER – Joshua Irving of Forth Worth fired an opening round 6-under par 66 to lead the North Amateur. Irving’s low number was the result of six consecutive birdies as he made the turn. Despite two bogeys on the day, Irving remains two strokes ahead of Flower Mound’s Andrew Spear.
Spear, a product of the Legends Junior Tour, opened the first round of the North Amateur with a 4-under par 68, closing his round with a birdie on the lengthy par five 18th hole at Gentle Creek Country Club.
A sunny afternoon in Prosper saw multiple under-par rounds to start the North Amateur Championship, presented by UST Mamiya. The fourth in a series of regional events conducted by the Texas Golf Association, the North Amateur is being contested at Gentle Creek Country Club in the North Texas community of Propser.
Rounding out the top of the leaderboard were Brad Gibson of Plano and Zach Sudinsky of McKinney, who each carded 3-under par 69’s to position themselves in contention heading into the weekend.
Gentle Creek Country Club is no stranger to hosting events conducted by the Texas Golf Association. The club previously held the 2009 North Senior Amateur, which was won by Prosper native Jim Hays, who captured the regional championship by four shots and finishing three under par for the championship.
Designed by D.A. Weibring, Gentle Creek Country Club is nestled in a natural wooded setting that has the potential to play over 7,300 yards with no shortage of challenging holes tee to green.
The second round of the North Amateur presented by UST Mamiya gets underway tomorrow, August 1st, at 7:30 am off both the first and tenth tees. At the conclusion of the second round tomorrow, the field will be re-paired, based on total score from the first 36 holes of play. Click here for starting times, pairings and scoring results.
