Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic Set for Feb. 6-7
LAKEWAY – The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic will be played at Lakeway Country Club’s Live Oak Course for the third time in its 14-year history.
“We take tremendous pride in being involved in growing junior golf,” Lakeway Country Club Head Golf Professional Keith Rader said. “It’s an honor to have the best players in the state coming here to challenge their games on our course.”
The event is named after one of Texas’ golf legends, Jimmy Demaret, who won three Masters Tournaments and 31 PGA Tour events in a career that spanned from 1935-57. He became the first three-time Masters champion after his victory in 1950 and was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1983. The inaugural Jimmy Demaret Junior Championship was held at Onion Creek Club in 2008.
Scheduled for 36 holes of individual stroke play, the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic features 84 golfers playing in three different divisions: Boys 15-18, Girls 12-18 and Boys 14 & Under. This is the second event of the 2021 season following the Winter Classic held at Dallas Athletic Club on Jan. 16-17.
In the Boys 15-18 Division, Davis Ovard of Plano will look to win consecutive LJT titles. He claimed the Winter Classic (the first tournament of the season) by one stroke after posting rounds of 71-74. Other notables in the field are Jay Pabin of Lucas, Awesome Burnett of Flower Mound, Connor Adams of Dallas, Patrick Kahanek of San Antonio and Gage Doyle of Colleyville.
Mimi Burton of Austin highlights the Girls 12-18 Division. The sophomore at Vandegrift High School will look to win her first LJT title. Last year, Burton recorded top-10 finishes in all five of her starts. Julia Vollmer of San Antonio, who finished second in the 2020 Girls 12-18 Player of the Year Standings, will also look to win her first LJT title. Her best finish last season was T2 at the Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational.
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, the defending champion, Austin Hofferkamp of The Woodlands, will seek consecutive wins in 2021. He carded rounds of 73-68 to win the Winter Classic by six shots. Hofferkamp will face a star-studded field, including the 94th Texas Junior Amateur Boys 14 & Under Champion Brooks Simmons of Dallas and last year’s Boys 14 & Under Player of the Year Rhett O’Rear of Plano.
Last year, Austin’s Zachary Kingsland fired rounds of 74-68 and won the Boys 15-18 Division by one stroke over Patrick Kahanek. Austin’s Vera Yi claimed the Girls 12-18 Division with back-to-back rounds of 74, while Hofferkamp won the Boys 14 & Under Division.
Other past champions of the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic include Cooper Dossey, Philip Barbaree, Cole Hammer, Annika Clark, Maddie Szeryk, Tayler Termeer, Mac Meissner, Macy Fox and Libby Thomas.
Lakeway Country Club’s Live Oak Course originally opened in 1965 and was designed by Leon Howard. The par-72 layout runs along Lake Travis and features dramatic elevation changes.
Tee times begin Saturday at 8 a.m. The final round takes place on Sunday, Feb. 7.
