Intern Spotlight Series: Tim Armstrong
For Tim Armstrong, retirement didn’t mean slowing down—it meant finding a new path. After stepping away from his first career, Armstrong applied for the P.J. Boatwright Internship with the Texas Golf Association as a way to stay active and pursue his passion for golf. What started as a learning opportunity has quickly turned into a launching pad for his second career in the game he loves.
One of Armstrong’s favorite experiences came during the South Mid-Amateur at Flying L Ranch in Bandera. “Great golf, great accommodations, great fellowship with my co-workers, and great food,” he recalled. “The course was in great condition, especially for March. We were able to play multiple rounds that week, and our cabins overlooked the first green.”
Throughout the internship, Armstrong says the relationships he’s built and the courses he’s visited stand out the most. His dedication has already paid off: he was recently offered a position at Jersey Meadow Golf Club, one of the Texas Mid-Amateur Qualifier event sites. “I have made so many connections in the golf industry locally,” Armstrong said. “This internship really opened doors.”
The experience has also given him a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run championship golf. From setting up tee markers and signage before sunrise to starting groups, monitoring pace of play, and tearing down at sundown, Armstrong described the long but rewarding days as “enlightening.”
One of his most memorable moments came at the Texas Super Senior Amateur, where he served as a starter on his 66th birthday. “I had a great time with the players on the tee that day—many of them called me a baby,” he said with a laugh.
Armstrong’s advice for future interns is simple: “Give it 110% every single day and ask for more opportunities to learn and take on more responsibility.” For him, the internship has been more than just a role—it has been the beginning of an exciting new chapter in golf.
