Hurd, Givens, and Clancy Win at Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic
LEANDER – Austin’s Sterling Hurd shot an impressive one-under-par 71 to win the Boys 15-18 Division with a two-day total of even par 144. Jack Clancy of Dallas made a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture the win in the Boys 14 & Under Division. Sidney Givens of Austin won the Girls 12-18 Division by two shots with a two-day total of four-over-par.
Division Leaders: Hurd started out the day strong with a birdie on the 1st hole. He kept the 4 streak going until he got to the par 5 hole 7 where he made a par. Hurd carded 4’s on both hole 8 and 9 to make the turn at one-over-par. He kept the momentum going on the back nine with two birdies on holes 12 and 16 helping him shoot a two day total of even par and winning the Boys 15-18 Division by one shot.
Clancy started off the day a bit rocky by making a double bogey on the par 4 hole 12th, but he turned it around when he made birdies on holes 11 and 14. He then strung 9 consecutive pars together before making a bogey on the par 5 7th. Clancy finished up his round with pars on hole 8 and 9 carding a three-over-par 75 on the day. He found himself in a three way tie with Austin’s Luciano Follmer and Yi Wen Huang. They went to the 18th hole where Clancy made a 6 foot putt for birdie to win the Boys 14 & Under Division.
Austin’s Sydney Givens shot a consistent even par 36 on her first nine carding only 4’s. When she made the turn to the front nine, she stayed consistent by paring the first 8 holes and ending her round with a bogey on the par 4 hole 9. Givens shot one-over-par on the day giving her a four-over-par two day total to win the Girls 12-18 Division by 2 shots.
In Contention: In the Boys 15-18 Division, Kuan Zhou of Sugar Land and Ben Delarosa of Dallas both shot two-day totals of one-over par 145. Richmond’s Eli Walker Campbell and Dallas’ Matthew Foster both carded rounds of four-over-par 76 today to finish tied for fourth with a tow-day total of two-over-par 146.
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Austin’s Luciano Follmer shot five-over-par 77 on the day while Austin’s Yi Wen Huang carded a six-over-par 78 tying them with Clancy for the lead.
In the Girls 12-18 Division, Amelia Guo of Seabrook shot an even par 72 to tie for second with Cedar Park’s Nirjara Gulhane’s at 6-over 150 overall.
Course: Crystal Falls Golf Club is in the picturesque Hill Country with a peaceful atmosphere and abundant wildlife. With numerous penalty areas and steep elevation changes, this 6,654 yard golf course may be short, but it still poses a formidable challenge.
Tournament Format: The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic is a 36-hole stroke play event for players with an active membership with the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. Players ages 12-18 are split into three different divisions: Boys 15-18, Girls 12-18 and Boys 14 & Under. The event is ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golfweek and has AJGA Performance Stars that will be handed out to the top finishers.
