Highlighting P.J. Boatwright Interns: Meet Tim Armstrong and Skyler Jones
Each year, the Texas Golf Association is proud to host talented professionals through the USGA’s P.J. Boatwright Internship Program—an initiative designed to introduce passionate individuals to the world of golf administration. This season, we’re excited to highlight each of our exceptional interns as they make a strong impact behind the scenes.
Tim Armstrong
Tim Armstrong grew up in Detroit, Michigan, playing several sports throughout his youth, including baseball, basketball, and football. Due to the shorter golf season in the Midwest, golf wasn’t a major part of his early life.
Tim attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo for three years before returning home following the passing of his father. He stepped in to help support his mother and the family’s real estate business. Determined to complete his education, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix in 2007.
Tim’s interest in golf grew when Tiger Woods burst onto the scene and began dominating the sport. Inspired by Woods, Tim started playing in the Golf Channel Amateur Tour in Michigan. He eventually won a tournament in his handicap division—an experience that further ignited his love for the game.
Before joining the P.J. Boatwright Internship Program, Tim enjoyed a 40-year career at General Motors. After retiring, he pursued his passion for golf by founding a mobile golf simulator business, which features a full inflatable bay enclosure, a launch monitor, and rental clubs for adults and juniors, both right- and left-handed.
Tim didn’t stop there. He became a pro shop staff member at Sienna Golf Club in Missouri City, Texas, and also worked as a youth golf instructor and golf tech at Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Tim brings a deep love for the game and a wealth of life experience to the P.J. Boatwright Internship. He first learned about the Texas Golf Association through a TGA Member Play Day, which sparked his interest in becoming more involved.
“I was most excited about everything this opportunity was offering, as I had never done anything like it before,” he shared.
The Texas Golf Association is thrilled to have Tim Armstrong as one of this year’s P.J. Boatwright Interns and looks forward to supporting his continued journey throughout the summer.
Skyler Jones
Skyler Jones, a native of Redmond, Oregon, grew up surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest. He and his family spent much of their time outdoors hiking and camping. While golf wasn’t a major part of his childhood, Skyler was actively involved in other sports, including basketball, tennis, soccer, and cross-country.
After graduating from high school, Skyler found himself with more free time and began playing golf more seriously. Looking to fill the competitive drive that sports had once satisfied, he quickly developed a passion for the game.
“Being able to now play this sport alongside my dad and brother is so special to me and something I’m always looking forward to,” he said. “My next goal is to pummel my dad in stroke play,” he added with a laugh.
Skyler went on to attend Grand Canyon University, where he earned a degree in business management with a minor in marketing. During college, he stayed active in intramural sports such as basketball, pickleball and indoor soccer. He was also a member of a business club and volunteered with a park ministry, experiences that helped him strengthen his communication skills and build a strong work ethic—traits he now brings to his internship.
Graduating a semester early, Skyler relocated to Dallas. Before joining the Texas Golf Association as a P.J. Boatwright Intern, he worked at Nike as a sales representative. Eager to pursue a career in sports, he sought out opportunities that aligned with his passion, leading him to discover the P.J. Boatwright Internship.
“What made me interested in the operations side of golf is having the opportunity to simply be around the sport and explore different courses,” he said. “You can’t ask for much more in a job when you get to travel to beautiful places and watch high-level golf.”
From day one, Skyler brought great energy to the team. Within his first week, he was already on the road, gaining hands-on experience at a tournament.
“What I was most excited about was starting the internship and getting to travel around Texas to see all the unique course designs,” he said. “As a new resident, I want to explore the entire state and see what Texas has to offer.”
We’re excited to have Skyler on the Texas Golf Association team as a P.J. Boatwright Intern and look forward to the rest of the summer with him.
