Haymon Wins His Third South Mid-Am Title

Briefly:

Broc Haymon fought hard to erase the two strokes the leaders had on him to start the round. He finished with a three-day total of a 211 5-under par. Haymon saw himself finish ahead of Jake Goodman, who carded a 215 1-under total for the week. Third place saw five players at a 216 even par tournament.

Golf Course:

Located 40 miles west of downtown San Antonio, Flying L Ranch Resort and Golf Course was opened in 1947 when Colonel John H. Lampham purchased the ranch from Polish settlers. Owned by the Stevens family, the course just finished a three-year renovation to include the featured island hole, new crushed marble bunkers, a par-3 19th hole, and the improvement of the overall course.

Weather:

Players fought the gusting wind in the first two days, with speeds eclipsing 30 mph at times. The cold conditions wore off as they finished up round 1 and throughout the weekend. No rain was present during any of the rounds, with the combination of dryness and strong winds causing trouble for the field.

Top Finishers:

Broc Haymon of League City started the round 2 strokes back of the lead, quickly erasing it with his 4-under 32 making the turn. After tripling the 11th, Haymon holed out for eagle on 13, followed by three more birdies in his final five holes. Haymon played his best golf at the start and finish of the tournament, sandwiching a 4-over, with a 3 and 6-under effort. This is Haymon’s third South Mid-Amateur Win, with his other two coming in ’17 and ’18. He looks forward to repeating next year.

Jake Goodman of San Antonio finished his week with an impressive round of 5-under. Goodman started the tournament with a round of 5-under, before a 9 on the 18th saw him drop to even par. After a 4 birdie, 1 eagle round, Jake found himself in solo second place. This will earn him an exemption into both the Texas Mid-Amateur and Texas Amateur.

The third place group of Carnes, Goldstein, Ross, Griffin, and Abad all came in at even par for the tournament. Most saw themselves back of the lead to start Round 2, and eventually climbing back to finish in the top 3.

Regional POY:

South Regional Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top 30 finishers. Haymon will receive 900, followed by 750 for Goodman, and 650 for the 5-way tie for third with the group of Carnes, Ross, Abad, Griffin, Goldstein
