
Cure Takes Early Lead at 36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play
Houston — Kim Cure kicked off the 36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play with a strong showing on Monday, posting a 9-over 81 at the challenging Braeburn Country Club in Houston, Texas. Her steady performance earned her the early lead in a tightly contested field, edging ahead of Carol Blackmar of Corpus Christi by a single stroke.

Leaders: In Monday’s first round, Wichita Falls’s Kim Cure’s opening round at Braeburn Country Club was a steady display of resilience and control. She started strong on the front nine, carding consistent pars with a string of 4s and 5s, totaling a respectable 39. Her back nine proved more challenging, despite the difficulties, her total score of 81 positioned her at the top of the leaderboard. Carol Blackmar sits just one stroke off the lead after a clutch birdie on the par-4 17th, keeping the pressure on heading into Tuesday’s round. Defending champion Claudia Ramirez also made a move with a birdie on the 9th, placing her two shots back in striking distance. Meanwhile, Linda Tran carded an 83 but capped her round with a confident birdie on 17, showing she is still very much in the mix. With the leaderboard tightening, the competition is heating up at Braeburn.
Flights Division Update: In the Flights Division, Lisa Papes took the early three-shot lead by firing a first round 7-over 79. Lecia Alexander, Jillian Nimblett, and Nora Sneider find themselves locked in a tie for third after each carding an 82 in Monday’s opening round at Braeburn Country Club.
Course: BraeBurn Country Club originally designed by architect John Bredemus in 1926. The course layout was redesigned in 1991 by Carlton Gipson. Gipson’s vision created a course that highlighted the elevation changes and rolling terrain that is unique to this surrounding area. In 2021 BraeBurn commissioned Tripp Davis & Associates to enhance the playability with a focus on restoring the classic parkland layout to its Golden Age heritage. In their work, Davis and Associates emphasized added shot-making variety and accessibility for players of all skill levels.
Tournament Info: The Women’s Senior Stroke Play is on its 36th year on schedule. Claudia Rameriz captured the victory last year at Walden at Lake Conroe Golf Club. The championship is a 54-hole stroke competition. The 16 players with the lowest handicap indexes at the Women’s Senior Stroke Play must play from the Championship Tees. All other players may select which tees they wish to play from – the Championship Tees or the Flights Tees. Upon completion of Round 2, the flights division will be broken into flights based on 36-hole scores.
What’s Next: Round 2 will tee off at 9:00 AM on Tuesday morning.After this, the TGA schedule takes us to the Women’s Texas Pinehurst at Gus Wortham GC in Houston. This fun team event takes place November 3-4. Registration opens September 10 at 9:00 AM CST.
