Creekmore, Dougherty Tied for Womens Senior Stroke Play Lead
GEORGETOWN – Carolyn Creekmore of Dallas and Camm Dougherty of Corpus Christi are tied at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the 2017 Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship. On a breezy, partly cloudy day at Berry Creek Country Club, Creekmore and Doughery both shot an even-par 72.
Three players are tied for third place with a 4-over 76, including Nancy Beck of Dallas, Julie Robichaux of Kingwood and Susan Smith-Snider of Houston.
Creekmore, the defending champion, began her round with three straight pars and a bogey on the long dogleg right fourth hole. However, she did have a strong finish on the front nine with two birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. Her back nine included an impressive eight straight pars, ending with a bogey on the 18th hole.
While Doughtery might have had a shaky start to the round with two bogeys on her first four holes, she quickly bounced back and sunk two birdies to end her front nine. She kept her momentum up with the back nine with three straight pars and another birdie on the 13th hole. Even with a bogey on No. 16, Doughtery ended strong with two straight pars to finish out her round.
The Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship is a three-day stroke play. The field of 70 ladies will be divided into five different flight after the 36-hole of competition. All players are competing for the Overall Title and also awarded will be the Super Senior (65 – 71 years of age) and the Super Senior (71 years of age and older).
This is the first year Berry Creek Country Club has held the Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship. The 18-hole facility is nestled on what was once Logan Ranch. The course features water on seven holes, strategically placed bunkers, and undulated Bermuda grass greens, making it a challenging and fun layout that will test the skills of the senior players in Texas.
