Anthony Estorga Crowned Champion of Mid-Amateur Match Play at Vaquero Club
Estorga Captures Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship
Westlake, Texas – Anthony Estorga claims the Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship winning against Gant Bills 5 & 3.
Anthony Estorga and Gant Bills rode hot putters going in to the Championship Match of the Mid-Amateur Match Play. Gant Bills took the early lead going 1 Up through the first 5 holes. After that, Estorga’s putter caught fire has he birdied the next three holes and after the front nine was 3 Up on Bills. Bills quickly won 10 to be only 2 down but could never catch up. Estorga knocked a 3-wood on the Par 5, 12th to 15 feet and when Bills couldn’t hole his bunker shot for par, he conceded the hole and Estorga reestablished his 3-up lead. He went 4-up with a par on the 14th hole and closed out Bills on the 15th when Gant failed to record another par. Estorga took the win in dominating fashion, 5 & 3.
Estorga’s road to the Championship title was a tough one as he was the 5th overall seed and faced a Vaquero host club member, Mark Johnston in the first round, competed against two fellow Hackberry Creek Country Club members that he plays regularly with, and then defeating a player who had reached the semifinals three years in a row including last year’s Mid-Amateur Match Play Runner-up, Scott Abbott. Finally, he took down arguably the hottest player in the field, Gant Bills to win it all.
The Texas Golf Association extends its sincere appreciation to Vaquero Club, its members and staff for all their contributions to the overall success of the Mid-Amateur Match Play.
