Clyde wins 26th Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play

SUGARLAND After a brief rain delay, No.24 seed Cal Clyde of Houston faced Spring’s No.6 seed Joey Gullion in the 26th Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play. Clyde’s Match Play journey includes the takedown of seeds No.8, No.9, No.17 and No.21. Gullion’s path to the Championship consisted of victories over seeds No.3, No.10, No.22 and No.27.

In the end Clyde took the victory over Gullion, Clyde is the Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play Champion. This is Clyde’s first Texas Golf Association victory.

Front nine: Gullion parred the first hole giving him a 1 up lead. Clyde then birdied the next three holes, to give him 1 up advantage over Gullion. Clyde kept rolling as he birdied two more holes to make the turn 5 up.

Back nine: Gullion was able to cut into Clyde’s lead by winning the par four 12th hole to only be 4 down, but Clyde closed the door for Gullion and ended the match with a par on the par three 14th hole. Clyde finished the marathon state championship winning 5 & 4.

Today’s Championship was played at 6,501 yards.

Course: The Cypress Course at Sweetwater Country Club opened in 1982 and was designed by Robert Packard. The layout is highlighted by constant elevation changes, numerous water hazards, and sloping green complexes guarded by deep-faced bunkers. Measuring just under 6,700 yards from the back tees, the strategic par-71 course places a premium on finesse, imagination and shot making, rather than strength.

Tournament History: The 26th edition of the championship begins with the mid-amateur (25 years and older) starting field playing 18 holes of stroke play qualifying on Thursday, August 1, with the lowest 32 scorers advancing to the match play stage of the championship. First- and second-round matches will be played Friday, August 2; quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday, August 3; and the final on Sunday, August 4. All matches are 18 holes.

What’s Next: The TGA will conduct their North and South Amateurs to close out the regional series. The regional amateurs are scheduled to be played simultaneously, August 9-11.

Next on the state championship schedule is the 49th Texas Four-Ball which will be contested August 23-25 at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston, TX.

Next is the 41st Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US and 87th Texas Senior Amateur qualifying is underway for the TGA with sites scattered across the state for the next two months.

The Texas Mid-Amateur which will be hosted by Denton Country Club September 6-8. The Texas Senior Amateur will be hosted by The Nelson Golf and Sports Club September 27-29.
