Cassity Scores Wire-to-Wire Victory Womens Eclectic Overall Gross
MONTGOMERY – Caitlyn Cassity of Katy won the 2017 Women’s Eclectic Overall Gross Championship with a wire-to-wire victory on a beautiful Tuesday morning at Walden on Lake Conroe. Cassity shot a 4-under-par 69 to win by two shots over Jewell Malick of Heath.
In the Net Competition, Tani Traver of Montgomery shot an 11-under 62 net score to win by one stroke. The tournament is played with a fun format in which players take her better-hole score over two rounds. Tuesday brought beautiful sunny skies, which made for ideal scoring conditions.
Cassity started off her round by reducing her front nine by five strokes. She parred the second, a treelined par 5 that doglegs to the left, and bettered her score from Monday by two strokes. She followed that with a birdie on the third hole, an uphill, 285-yard par 4. She also took two strokes off her score on the seventh and eight holes with a pair of pars.
Cassity also ended up parring the difficult par-5 11th hole, which zigzags downhill and finishes with a peninsula green on the shores of Lake Conroe. She only bettered her Eclectic gross total by one stroke on the back nine, but was able to hold on to win the Overall Gross. Malick shot a 2-under 71 and won Flight 1 by one shot over Claudia Ramirez of San Antonio and Marian Barker of Lubbock.
Traver held on to win the Overall Net competition by one stroke over Jennifer LeBlanc of Magnolia.
The 112-player field was divided into seven flights and played for Net and Gross scores within each flight. Flight 2 was won by Michele Wallace of Irving, shooting a 1-under 72 to win by one stroke. Patricia Walters of Sealy shot an 8-over 81 to win Flight 3 outright. In Flight 4, and Gerrie Donovan of The Woodlands won in a scorecard playoff to win First Gross over Linda Bowser of Montgomery. Chery Wright of Huntsville won Flight 5 First Gross by one stroke over Mollie Hammonds of Houston. Diane Kirwan of McKinney finished 11-over par in Flight 6 to win.
