27th Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play Set for July 24-27
Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club in Rockwall will be the host site for the 27th Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play. Scheduled for July 24-27, the championship will feature the state’s top male amateur golfers ages 25 and older squaring off in a head-to-head, single-elimination competition.
This will be the second TGA men’s championship to be held at Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club, which previously hosted the 2023 North Regional Mid-Amateur, won by C.J. Brock.
“We are very excited to be invited back to Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club to conduct this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play,” said Chris Untiedt, TGA Senior Tournament Director. “The course has proven to be an elite championship venue and is certain to be a great test for the players as they compete for this prestigious title.”
Located 25 miles east of Dallas, Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club (formerly The Shores Country Club) opened in 1979 with an 18-hole championship course originally designed by Ralph Plummer. In 2012, noted Texas-based architect Jeffery Blume supervised a comprehensive remodel of the course that included reshaping and reconstructing tee boxes, fairways, bunkers and green complexes.
The par-72 layout, which is situated along the northeastern edge of Lake Ray Hubbard, is artfully routed through the natural environment with a compelling mix of holes trundling up and down over the rolling terrain. Stretching to 7,335 yards from the back tees, the course features an array of strategic elements that provide a rigorous challenge for even the most accomplished players.
“The course gives the contestants a lot of different ways they can play it, so it requires a great deal of thought off the tee and on approaches,” Untiedt said. “There are plenty of birdie opportunities throughout the round but also potential troublesome scenarios as well, which makes it an exciting stage for a match play event.”
The 27th edition of the championship begins with a 90-player starting field playing 18 holes of stroke play qualifying on Thursday, July 24, with the lowest 32 scorers advancing to the match play stage of the championship. First- and second-round matches will be played on Friday, July 25; quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday, July 26; and the finals on Sunday, July 27. All matches are 18 holes.
Starting times for the stroke play qualifying round will be posted on the TGA website no later than July 21. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club.
At last year’s Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play, held on the Cypress Course at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Cal Clyde of Dallas birdied four of the first six holes to build an early 3-hole lead over Joey Gullion of Spring in the finals and would eventually close out the match, 5 and 4, to win the title.
First held in 1999, the Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play is the only individual event on the TGA annual schedule to feature head-to-head competition. Notable past winners include Texas Golf Hall of Famers Chip Stewart (2001) and Mike Booker (2013).
