Oklahoma Leads Red River Cup Matches
Duncan, Okla. — Oklahoma holds a 16-11 lead after Four-Ball Matches on the first day of the Inaugural Red River Cup. The Territory Golf & Country Club is hosting the first year of matches between the Oklahoma Golf Association and Texas Golf Association.
The Red River Cup Matches feature 18 players representing Texas against 18 players representing Oklahoma. Each match is worth three points and the tournament is two rounds of matches. The final round will feature 18 Singles Matches on Thursday.
Oklahoma won five of nine 18-hole matches on Wednesday. Kyle Hudelson and Heath Myers were able to secure all available points in their match to help build their team’s five-point lead. For Texas, Jeremy Freedman of Dallas and Gant Bills of Plano secured all three of their points, while Patthawan Livingston of New Braunfels and Tammy Trichell of Helotes won 2 ½ points in their match. Livingston and Trichell are coming off a victory at the Women’s Texas Pinehurst at Wichita Falls Country Club last month.
Tyler’s Aaron Hickman and Celina’s Rob Couture we’re able to secure 2 ½ points in their match, winning the overall and front nine 2&1. They halved the back nine point.
Trophy Club’s David Johnson and Spring’s Randy Lance, who is the captain of the Texas squad, secured the final point of the day for Texas. Johnson hit his approach to within three feet on the par-4 18th and made the putt to tie their match and the back nine.
Weather was chilly to start the day with temperatures in the high 30s. The winds were steady around 15 miles per hour throughout the day with the sun coming out later in the day raising the temps into the 50s. Thursday’s weather is forecasted to mirror the weather on Wednesday.
Pairings for the singles matches were announced at dinner on Wednesday and can be viewed by clicking here. The 54 available points will determine who will win the inaugural Red River Cup. The format will feature Nassau scoring with points available for the total, front nine and back nine matches. The par-72 layout at The Territory Golf & Country Club has been a fantastic test for the field.
The Territory Golf & Country Club features mature oak trees and is nestled among numerous rock outcroppings across its 640 acres. The course was designed by Randy Heckenkemper and pays homage to the terrain. Stagestand creek traverses itself through the property and sits at the base of the 100-foot elevation changes throughout.
The Texas Team roster was built using Player of the Year Standings for the Men’s and Women’s Texas Statewide and Senior awards. The team was made up of eight mid-amateurs, six senior amateurs and four women from across the state.
