North Team wins Jackie Burke Cup
ANNA, Texas – The North Team has won the 2024 Jackie Burke Cup, breaking a three-year drought and securing the trophy with a decisive 29-19 victory over the South Team. Heading into Sunday’s singles matches with a 15-9 lead, the North Team held strong to bring the cup back to North Texas.
The Jackie Burke Cup, modeled after the Ryder Cup, is a team match-play event that pits North Texas against South Texas. Each team consists of 12 players, with each match worth two points. The team with the most points at the end of Sunday’s play claims the cup.
In the final singles matches, the North Team showcased its depth and determination. The opening match saw Austin Randall of Prosper deliver a dominant 5&3 win over Preston Hiller of San Antonio. The South Team countered in the next two matches, with Mackey Beckett of Lakeway defeating Landon Hilario of Garland and Tyler Neidel securing a win over Jaxson Henegar.
Momentum swung back to the North as Alex Escamilla of Midland clinched the team’s 19th point by defeating Kaden Frierson of Austin 2&1. Austin Anderson of Gunter then added another victory for the North, overcoming Evan Hofferkamp of The Woodlands 3&2. Although South Team players J.P. Lynch of Austin and Peyton De Bruin of Houston claimed crucial matches to keep their hopes alive, the North Team surged ahead, winning four consecutive matches and securing the 25 points needed to clinch the cup.
This marks the 10th Jackie Burke Cup victory for the North Team, tying up the all-time record to 10-10.
The final day saw perfect playing conditions at Hurricane Creek Country Club, starting in the 50s before temperatures rose to the mid-70s, with no wind throughout the day.
