Denton Country Club in Argyle will be the host site for the 22nd Texas Shootout. The annual showdown between top-ranked male amateur golfers from North Texas and South Texas is scheduled for Nov. 2-3.

This will be the second prestigious TGA event to be held at Denton Country Club in less than three months and the third overall. In early September, Denton Country Club welcomed the 41st Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US, won by Kendrick Vinar of Richardson. The club previously hosted the 2022 Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play, won by Jason Schultz.

“We are excited to be back at Denton Country Club once again for the season-ending Texas Shootout,” said Chris Untiedt, TGA Senior Tournament Director. “We are very appreciative of the club’s enthusiastic commitment to supporting amateur competitions, and we are certain the course will prove to be an ideal stage for this unique event.”

Located on the far north end of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Denton Country Club opened in 1922 with a nine-hole course. The club expanded to 18 holes in the late 1960s with an original design by Texas Golf Hall of Fame architect Ralph Plummer. The strategic par-71 layout tumbles up and down the natural rolling terrain and is highlighted by constant elevation changes, narrow fairways, and lightning-fast greens.

“A lot of the players have been here before, so they know to expect a really fun yet challenging test,” Untiedt said. “The course provides plenty of risk-reward opportunities throughout the round, which is going to make for an exciting match-play contest between these two great teams.”

The Texas Shootout features two 12-player teams comprised of eight mid-amateurs (age 25 and older) and four seniors (age 55 and older). Players earn their way onto their respective teams by acquiring performance points for top finishes throughout the year in designated TGA regional and statewide tournaments, as well as USGA national championships. North and South regions are defined as either being above or below the 31st parallel. (The city of Salado, which is located approximately halfway between Austin and Waco, sits on the dividing line.)

The format for the Shootout includes foursome, four-ball and singles matches. A total of 24 matches will be played over the two days. Each match is worth three points – one point each for the front nine, back nine and 18 – making for 72 available points. The first team to accumulate 36.5 points is the winner.

At the 2023 Texas Shootout, hosted by historic Galveston Country Club, the North Texas team held a commanding lead after the four-ball and foursome matches on Day 1 and never looked back. In what ended up being a dominating 42.5-29.5 victory over the South Texas squad, the North Texas team retook the lead in the overall series, 11-10.
