50th Texas Four-Ball Championship Set for Aug. 22-24
Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater will be the host venue for the 50th edition of the Texas Four-Ball Championship, scheduled for Aug. 22-24.
This will be the first statewide event and third overall TGA men’s competition contested at the East Texas club, which previously hosted the 2022 North Regional Four-Ball and 2024 North Regional Amateur.
“We are thrilled to return to Tempest Golf Club this year for the 50th Texas Four-Ball,” said Chris Untiedt, TGA Senior Tournament Director. “Tempest has proven to be a fantastic stage, and we know the club’s spectacular setting and acclaimed course will not only challenge the best players from around the state, but will also provide a welcoming environment for this premier championship.”
Located 15 miles northwest of Longview, Tempest Golf Club made its debut in 2018 following the completion of a two-year, multimillion-dollar reimaging of the existing property (Southern Hills Golf Club) by award-winning architect Jeffrey Brauer. The result of the total redesign is a stunning 7,229-yard, par-72 layout that traverses through rolling hills framed by piney woodlands and is highlighted by pronounced elevation changes, undulating fairways and greens, and numerous water hazards.
“Tempest has wonderful variety and balance, with a lot of risk-reward features throughout the round that will test a team’s shot-making and decision-making skills,” Untiedt said. “It is sure to deliver an exciting and enjoyable championship experience for all the players in the field.”
The 50th Texas Four-Ball will feature three divisions: Championship (age 25 and older), Senior (age 55 and older), and Super Senior (age 65 and older). The starting field limit is 80 teams, with 48 spots allotted to the Championship Division, 20 to the Senior Division, and 12 to the Super Senior Division. The three divisions compete from different sets of tees and yardages, with separate champions recognized in each division.
The format for the championship is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the lowest 40 team scores and ties, with a pro-rated representation from each division.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted on the TGA website no later than Aug. 21. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Tempest Golf Club.
At the 2024 Texas Four-Ball held at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston, Anthony Estorga and Jake Istnick won the Championship Division on the first playoff hole over RJ Hernandez and Nickolas Martinez. The two teams were tied at 20-under-par 196 at the end of 54 holes of regulation play. It was a welcome change of fortunes for Estorga and Istnick, who finished runner-up at the 2023 championship after losing on the third playoff hole to Aaron Hickman and Rory Smith. Trevor Hyde and Tray Tyner posted a three-day total of 17-under 199 to claim a one-stroke victory in the Senior Division over Mike Lohner and Todd Vancil. In the Super Senior Division, Doug Harker and Bill Houghton finished at 6-under 210 to win the title by two over John Grace and Bill Holstead.
First played in 1976, the Texas Four-Ball is one of the four TGA men’s major amateur championships conducted each year, along with the Texas Amateur, Texas Senior Amateur, and Texas Mid-Amateur.
