What is the PJ Boatwright Internship Program?

Founded in 1991, the PJ Boatwright internship program is designed to help introduce and develop individuals to work in the golf administration business. Golf administration plays a crucial role in managing and organizing golf-related activities and events. It involves overseeing various aspects of the sport, including tournament management, handicapping, rules enforcement, communications, membership services, and on-site facility management.

Does the PJ Boatwright Internship have a strong status in the Golf Industry?

The PJ Boatwright Internship program is one of the most recognized internships in golf across the United States. During the internship, the USGA brings up 2-3 interns from every state to their Headquarters in New Jersey where you will meet with current employers that have gone through the PJ Boatwright internship program. At the Texas Golf Association alone, the championship department has 8 of 11 current employees who were also former PJ Boatwright Interns.

What does the PJ Boatwright Internship look like in the Texas Golf Association?

Tournament Management – In the program, you will be responsible for helping plan and execute golf tournaments. This includes site visits for tournaments and coordinating with golf clubs and players. Additionally, the golf administration ensures fair competition by implementing tournament rules and regulations, finalizing scores, and awarding players. You will also get insight into packing all items needed for the tournament in company-wide vehicles.

Rules Enforcement – Interns will learn the USGA official rules for all tournaments and qualifiers. Administrators will also help in handling disputes or rule violations that may arise, maintaining the integrity of the game.

Handicapping – Handicapping is a system that allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly. You will get to see the insight of handicap management and understand in more detail how it works. A lot of tournaments and qualifiers you work for the men’s and woman’s TGA involve a handicap requirement in order to play in it.

Communication in golf is essential for spreading information before, during, and after the tournament. You will learn from the Communications administrator what it looks like to run social media and website for the TGA.

Meeting with Experienced Golf Professionals and Superintendents

Throughout your internship, you will get to travel to many golf courses and speak with both Golf Professionals and Golf Superintendents at courses. This is a great experience getting to make connections in the industry with those who work closely with the Texas Golf Association. You can learn from them directly how they found themselves in their current role and where they have been in the past as well.
