Cure Keeps her Lead at 36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play

Houston — Kim Cure maintained her lead at the 36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play with a composed and resilient performance at Braeburn Country Club in Houston. After firing a second round of 79, Cure displayed steady play on the front nine and navigated the tougher back nine with determination. Her consistency kept her ahead of the competition, holding off Carol Blackmar by 1 stroke.

Leaders: Kim Cure’s round of 79 at Braeburn Country Club was a testament to her grit and consistency. She opened the front nine with a mix of precision and recovery, carding a 39 that included a standout birdie on the second hole and steady pars across the middle stretch. Despite a couple of bogeys, she kept her composure, especially on the challenging eighth and ninth holes. On the back nine, Cure continued her disciplined play, posting a 40 with solid approach shots and confident putting. Her ability to minimize mistakes and stay focused under pressure helped her maintain a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship. Carol Blackmar also carded an impressive round of 79, keeping the leaderboard tight. Defending champion Claudia Ramirez is just three strokes back, setting the stage for a thrilling final round in the Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship.

Flights Division Update: In the Flights Division, Lisa Papes maintains a two-shot lead by firing a second round of 7-over 79. A strong round of 78 moved Nora Sneider into solo second place, breaking a three-way tie. She’s just two strokes off the lead and well-positioned for the approaching final round. Lily Lee moves up to 3rd on the leaderboard after carding an 84. After todays round the flights division will be split into separate flights based on the previous two day’s scores along with a Super Senior recognition.

Course: BraeBurn Country Club originally designed by architect John Bredemus in 1926. The course layout was redesigned in 1991 by Carlton Gipson. Gipson’s vision created a course that highlighted the elevation changes and rolling terrain that is unique to this surrounding area. In 2021 BraeBurn commissioned Tripp Davis & Associates to enhance the playability with a focus on restoring the classic parkland layout to its Golden Age heritage. In their work, Davis and Associates emphasized added shot-making variety and accessibility for players of all skill levels.

Tournament Info: The Women’s Senior Stroke Play is on its 36th year on schedule. Claudia Rameriz captured the victory last year at Walden at Lake Conroe Golf Club. The championship is a 54-hole stroke competition. The 16 players with the lowest handicap indexes at the Women’s Senior Stroke Play must play from the Championship Tees. All other players may select which tees they wish to play from – the Championship Tees or the Flights Tees. Upon completion of Round 2, the flights division will be broken into flights based on 36-hole scores.

What’s Next: Round 3 will tee off at 9:00 AM on Wednesday morning.After this, the TGA schedule takes us to the Women’s Texas Pinehurst at Gus Wortham GC in Houston. This fun team event takes place November 3-4. Registration opens September 10 at 9:00 AM CST.
