Let’s Hear it for the Hometown Heroes of Golf, Municipal Courses

They’re where most of us first teed it up. Where junior clinics, high school teams, charity scrambles, and everyday weekend rounds
make up the heartbeat of the game.  That’s why the TGA launched Project Muni — a grant program designed to support municipal golf across Texas by improving course conditions, enhancing the player experience, and growing connections with public golfers.

Why Munis Matter
• 75% of all rounds nationwide are played on public courses
• Municipal courses are community hubs: affordable, accessible, and open to all
• Texas has the 3rd highest demand per public course in the country

Yet for all their significant contributions to the game, many munis face tight budgets that make upgrades tough to prioritize. That’s where the TGA — and you — step in.

How Project Muni Works
Project Muni offers municipal clubs two key forms of support:
1. USGA® Agronomy Consultation Funding Every municipal TGA member club can receive expert on-site agronomy evaluations through the USGA Green Section — at no cost to the course.
2. Matching Grants for Strategic Projects Courses can apply for TGA-matched funds to complete course improvements that directly enhance the golfer experience or operational sustainability.

Real Investment, Real Impact
By the end of 2025, the TGA will have invested $300,000 into Project Muni — helping courses across Texas improve playing conditions, complete strategic upgrades, and better serve their communities. And we’re not stopping there. We’ve committed to a $1 million total investment by 2029 to ensure that municipal golf in Texas continues to grow, thrive, and welcome the next generation of players.

Case in Point: The Courses at Watters Creek, Allen TX
With the help of a $12,500 Project Muni Grant, The Courses at Watters Creek upgraded its maintenance equipment by purchasing a new turf sweeper — a key investment in both efficiency and course conditions. The machine significantly reduces the time and labor required to remove debris like aerification cores, leaves, and clippings, while improving overall turf health and playability. The result? Cleaner greens, better playing surfaces, and more time for the crew to focus on delivering a great golfer experience.

The Future of Public Golf Starts Here
When you support the TGA Gallery Club, you’re helping us invest in the places where golf begins — and where it grows stronger, more welcoming, and more sustainable for everyone.
