White Claims Top Seed at Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play

Briefly: Charles White earned the top seed headed into the Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play after a Stroke Play Qualifying Round of 6-under-par 66 at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond. Friday begins the marathon 32-player, single-elimination bracket to crown a state champion.

Golf Course: Opened in 1999, the award-winning course at Shadow Hawk was designed by Rees Jones. The 7,207-yard, par-72 layout stretches across 274 acres of pristine land and features a great variety of shape and length of holes, ample fairways, artistic bunkering and small, elevated greens. All the subtle challenges are front and center at Shadow Hawk; there are no tricks or gimmicks here. Shadow Hawk has earned the well-deserved reputation as a straightforward test of a player’s skill.
 
Weather: Sunny with a high in the upper-80s and a slight breeze out of the north.
 
In contention: Bart Worthing is the second seed after a Qualifying Round of 2-under 70. Worthing finished in a three-way tie for second with Benbrook’s Kevin Doskocil and Randy Lance of Spring. After all of the scores were verified, there was a playoff at 4-over 76 for the final seeds in Match Play. The one-hole playoff saw nine players vying for seven spots.
 
What’s Next: Friday morning’s Round of 32 begins at 7:30 a.m., and the Round of 16 takes place tomorrow afternoon at approximately 1 p.m.
