
Tyner, Stuth Win South Senior Amateur
Briefly: Kerrville’s Tray Tyner breaks through with his third Texas Golf Association victory following a two-shot win in the 2025 South Senior Amateur at Northgate Country Club. Tyner started the final round one shot off the lead and posted a final round two-under par score to sit atop the leaderboard at one-under par for the championship.
Chris Stuth, of Houston, claimed his first Texas Golf Association championship with his victory in the Super Senior Division. Stuth’s two-day total of seven-over par was good for a two-shot victory over Houston’s Bob Kearney, who finished at nine-over par.
Golf Course: Northgate Country Club’s originally opened as a 27-hole facility in 1983 and was designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. After the Spring Floods in 2016, the facility was converted to an 18-hole championship golf course and features a five-hole short course. Recently hosting the 2018 TGA Women’s Senior Stroke Play, this is the first TGA Men’s Regional event Northgate Country Club has hosted.
Weather: Monday’s opening round of the South Senior Amateur welcomed the players with partly cloudy skies and calm winds. The field saw a high of mid-70’s throughout the day. Tuesday’s final round started with foggy conditions which later cleared as the wind picked up. Partly cloudy skies and windy conditions were consistent throughout the day with a high of 84 degrees.
Top Finishers: Tyner played steady golf, even improving his score by three strokes in his final round to secure the victory. Tyner closed out the championship four strokes ahead of Woodland’s Jay Edwards and five strokes ahead of Montgomery’s Kevin Cashman and David Ortego of Spring. Edwards finished the South Senior Amateur at three-over par. Cashman and Ortego finished third with an overall score of four-over par.
Super Senior Division: Stuth, a member at Tomball Country Club, who let his irons do the work today, Hit fifteen out of eighteen greens in regulation in the final round of the South Senior Amateur. Stuth posted three birdies and three bogeys during his final round for even-par.
Finishing in second place was runner-up Bob Kearney of Houston with a overall score of nine-over par. Tied in third place were Mark Johnson of Kingsland and Douglas Jones of McQueeny, with a overall score of ten-over par for this years championship.
Regional POY: Texas Senior and Super Senior Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top finishers at the 2025 South Senior Amateur. The winning player in each division will receive 500 points, followed by 400 for second place, 300 for third, 200 for fourth, and 100 for fifth. For TGA Player Of the Year information, click here.
What’s Next: The next event in the Regional Series will be the 97th West Texas Amateur at Abilene Country Club on the South Course. Registration will open on May 21 at 9:00 AM and is open to players from all over the state. The event will be played July 18-20 and consist of three divisions – Open, Senior, and Super Senior. The final regional event of the South Series will be the South Amateur at The Woodlands Country Club on the West Course. Registration will open at 9:00 AM on June 11.
