Texas Launches State Team as Part of the USGA’s U.S. National Development Program

Texas is launching a state junior golf team that will expand the pipeline for elite golfers into the U.S. National Development Program (USNDP), an initiative launched by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 2023 to create critical player development, competitive, and talent identification opportunities for golfers ages 13-18.

“Team Texas reflects a shared commitment to giving every young golfer in our state a pathway to reach their potential,” said Stacy Dennis, Executive Director of the Texas Golf Association (TGA). “By aligning with the USGA’s U.S. National Development Program, we’re building a more connected and inclusive system, one that supports the best juniors in Texas today while also helping the next generation see what’s possible.”

Texas is one of 14 states added under the program’s latest expansion, joining a growing group of nearly 30 states and regions now participating in the USNDP’s State Team Program. The program’s goal is for every state to have a team in place by 2033, forming a national pathway that connects junior golfers to elite amateur and professional development opportunities.

The Team Texas Selection Committee, composed of representatives from the TGA and the Northern and Southern Texas Sections of the PGA of America, will oversee team selection criteria and the operations in alignment with USGA guidelines. Together, these organizations form the foundation of Team Texas, ensuring that player development and competitive opportunities reflect the full strength and reach of the Texas golf community.

“This collaboration unites every part of Texas golf around a common purpose: developing talent, character, and opportunity,” said TGA President Lee Sandlin. “Team Texas will not only elevate the most accomplished players but also strengthen the foundation for every junior who dreams of competing at the highest level.”

Team selection will be based on a combination of points structure, rankings, and other competitive factors, and will be published prior to the entry deadline of the first counting event of the 2026 season. Following the conclusion of the 2026 season, the committee will name 20 athletes (10 boys and 10 girls) to represent the inaugural 2027 Team Texas.

“Team Texas represents an opportunity to give young players the full scope of what it takes to become a top athlete, not just skill, but character, discipline, and heart,” said Sandra Haynie, World Golf Hall of Famer and Team Texas Committee Member. “The U.S. National Development Program brings that holistic vision to life, and I’m proud to see Texas helping lead the way.”

To be eligible to compete on Team Texas, a player must be a U.S. citizen. Each eligible player must be 13 years old by Jan. 1, 2027, have not reached their 19th birthday by July 19, 2027, and must not be enrolled in college for the 2026-2027 school year.
