Stephenson Goes Wire-to-Wire at the North Mid-Amateur
(Plano, TX) The North Mid-Amateur, presented by UST Mamiya,
concluded at the Prestonwood Country Club – Hills course on Sunday. The
temperature for the final round was ideal, but the windy conditions made the
Hills course much more challenging. With
six players within five shots of the lead, it was sure to be an exciting day of
golf.
The low round of the day went to
Bill Steen of Frisco. Steen shot a final round of 2-under par, 70, in the
difficult conditions, vaulting him 20 places into a tie for 11th for
the championship. Brandon Scott of Justin, who struggled with the putter during
the first two rounds, recorded one of three under par rounds on Sunday. Scott
had it to 3-under par on the round at one point before finishing the day at
1-under par. At 1-over par for the tournament, Scott finished in a tie for
fifth with Brad Gibson. John Bearrie of Arlington, who entered the day tied for
second place, shot a final round of 3-over par, 75, to finish alone in fourth.
The story of the championship belongs
to Lewis Stephenson of Mansfield who went on to win after leading the
tournament wire-to-wire. Stephenson entered the final round with a two shot
lead over Bearrie and Pruitt but gave up some ground with two bogeys on the
front nine. Although Stephenson added another bogey and a double bogey on the
back nine, he was saved by birdies on holes 11, 15, and 17. With a 54-hole
total of 3-under par, 213, Stephenson went on to win the championship by one
shot over Joshua Irving of Fort Worth, and Michael Pruitt of Lubbock.
The North Regional events continue
