South Wins Jackie Burke Cup

BULLARD – The South Team won the Jackie Burke Cup for the third consecutive year with a convincing 30-18 victory on Sunday at Eagle’s Bluff Country Club. 

The Jackie Burke Cup is a team match play event modeled after the Ryder Cup. Each team features 12 players as North Texas takes on South Texas. Each match is worth two points and the team with the most points after Sunday wins the cup. 

Entering Sunday tied at 12 points a piece, both teams had a great opportunity to grab bragging rights for the next year. The South Team started the day strong and never looked back. They jumped out to an early lead in 7 matches around the midway point. Over the course of the day, the South Team continued its strong play and eventually won 8 matches en route to the impressive victory over the North. Selma’s Aadi Parmar secured the clinching points for the South Team with a 1 UP win over Landon Hilario. The South’s Preston Hiller and Kyle Doolittle were the only players to go undefeated on the weekend as they each won all three of their matches. 

This is the South Team’s third consecutive victory at the Jackie Burke Cup after breaking a 7-year drought at Willow Brook Country Club in 2021. With the victory, the South Team now takes the overall series lead at 10 wins to the North’s 9.  

Sunday’s temperatures began in the low 50’s to start the day and then reached the low 60’s later in the afternoon. Winds were a little stronger on Sunday, ranging around 10 miles per hour. 

Along with the Jackie Burke Cup going to the South Team, players of the year were announced at the player banquet Saturday night. Garland’s Garrett McMellon was the Boys 15-18 Player of the Year, while Kaylee Yuan of Joshua won Girls 12-18 Player of the Year and Selma’s Aadi Parmar received the Boys 14 & Under Player of the Year. Austin’s Jaxon Bandelier was named the 2023 James A. Ragan Sportsman of the year. 

Opened in 1999, Eagle’s Bluff Country Club is a 462-acre master-planned community bordering the eastern shoreline of Lake Palestine. The golf course was designed by Carlton Gibson and is set on a rolling piece of property highlighted by stately pines, dogwoods, azaleas, and picturesque views of the lake. The strategic par-71 layout, which measures close to 7,000 yards from the back set of tees, features holes that play in a variety of directions, with contoured fairways and greens, and numerous water hazards.
