Round One of 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational Suspended Due to Darkness
Alyssa Esparza of Laredo holds the lead after a weather-plagued opening round at the 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational was suspended because of darkness Saturday. Esparza was 2-under par through 10 holes when play was called for the day.
Mother Nature dictated the pace throughout the day in the first major championship of the 2026 Legends Junior Tour season.
Players teed off at 8 a.m. from the No. 1 tee in steady drizzle and saturated conditions. The rain eased into mist as the morning progressed, but shifting winds added another challenge. At 11:45 a.m., play was suspended for 1 hour, 30 minutes because of heavy rain and lightning in the area.
After a brief return to the course, another wave of storms forced a second suspension at 2 p.m. That delay lasted two hours as tournament staff and officials worked to position the field to complete as many holes as possible.
Esparza, a sophomore, wasted little time climbing the leaderboard. She birdied Nos. 3, 4 and 5 in succession to move to 3-under early in her round. A bogey on No. 6 slowed the momentum, but she settled in with steady pars the rest of the way to reach the 10th tee at 2-under when the horn sounded.
Carolyn Liu of Katy sits one shot back after completing her round at 1-under 71. Also, a sophomore, Liu delivered one of the steadiest performances of the day amid the difficult conditions. She played the front nine without a bogey, added a birdie on No. 13 and recorded her only blemish with a bogey on No. 14.
Dresden Bounds of San Antonio is in third at even-par 72 after finishing her round. The Oklahoma State women’s golf commit continued a strong start to the 2026 season, having won the Winter Classic in January at Dallas Athletic Club. She will look to carry that momentum into the remainder of the tournament.
Krysta Loftin of Pearland stands in fourth at 1-over par through 10 holes. The Houston Christian women’s golf commit is among those scheduled to complete the first round Sunday morning before beginning the second.
Tied for fifth at 2-over are Payson Pistono of The Woodlands, Kensley Cova of Austin, Pippa Fikes of Fair Oaks Ranch and Paityon Carter of Waco, all within striking distance as the tournament resumes.
The first round will resume at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in a shotgun start. Players will start Round 2 at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
The Texas Girls’ Invitational, one of the state’s premier all-girls amateur events, annually draws top talent from across Texas and beyond — including international representation this year. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 30 players and ties, setting the stage for a competitive finish if the weather cooperates.
