Rob Couture Wins 2024 North Amateur
Briefly: Rob Couture of Celina, who started the final round six strokes off the lead, shot a six-under 64 to make a comeback win on Sunday at Tempest Golf Club. Couture, one of the mid-amateur players in the field, showed poise and grit over three rounds to finish the championship at seven-under par 203.
Golf Course: Tempest Golf Club was built in 1989 by the Webb Family. After new ownership and major renovation, the course has been opened as we know it since 2018. Once rated as a Top 50 golf course in the state of Texas, Tempest Golf Club is set to host its first TGA regional championship.
Weather: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s rounds began with players teeing off with temperatures in the mid 80’s. Afternoon temperatures were steadily in the high 90’s all three days. Each day the skies were clear.
Top Finishers: Couture posted rounds of 67-72-64 over his three days, which included birdies on the 15th and 17th holes to secure his win down the stretch. Couture began the day one-under par, six shots back of the 36-hole leader. Couture remained bogey free the entire final round and carded six birdies, giving him a chance to chase down the leader, who shot a two-over par 72.
Finishing in second place was Richardson’s Hunter Wolfinger. Wolfinger entered the final round in the lead after rounds of 65 and 68 on Friday and Saturday. Wolfinger finished the tournament two stokes back of Couture at five-under par 205. Two players tied for third place for the tournament, Aaron Hickman of Tyler and Crowell’s Seth Bearden. Hickman shot rounds of 71-70-65 to finish at four-under par 206. Bearden shot a one-over par 71 in the first round and then bounced back with rounds of 66 and 69 on the weekend. Rounding out the top five was Jack Hollingsed from Dallas, who entered the day tied for fourth, finished solo fifth with rounds of 68-72-67.
Regional POY: North Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top 30 finishers at the 2024 North Amateur with the champion will receive 1,000 points. For Regional POY information, click here.
What’s Next: With the conclusion of the 2024 TGA Regional Series, next on the state championship schedule is the Texas Four-Ball. Registration for the Four-Ball will close on August 14 at 5:00 pm, the Four-Ball will be contested August 23-25 at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston. Texas Mid-Amateur qualifying is underway for the TGA with sites scattered across the state for the next two months. The 41st Texas Mid-Amateur will be hosted by Denton Country Club September 6-8.
