The TGA’s 2025 men’s regional tournament series continues this month with the North and South Regional Mid-Amateurs. The championships will be held concurrently from March 21-23.
The North Regional Mid-Amateur will be played at Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, while the South Regional Mid-Amateur will be contested at Flying L Ranch Resort & Golf Course in Bandera. This will be the first time hosting a TGA championship for both Tanglewood and Flying L Ranch.
Set on a bluff overlooking Lake Texoma, the 18-hole championship course at Tanglewood Resort opened in 1970 and was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ralph Plummer. It was remodeled by Ken Dye and Baxter Spann in 1988. Flying L Ranch Resort’s scenic 18-hole course was designed and constructed in-house by the owners and opened in 1972.
First played in 2003, Regional Mid-Amateur entries are open to male amateur golfers who are 25 years of age or older by the tournament start date, have an up-to-date WHS™ Handicap Index not exceeding 8.4 issued through a member club of the TGA, and reside in the region relative to their respective championship. The delineation between the North and South regions is the 31st parallel that passes through the city of Salado.
Both championships are conducted using the same competitive format. The starting field of 84 players will play 54 holes of individual stroke play over three days with no cut. Along with crowning an overall champion, special recognition will be given to the low mid-master (player aged 40 and older).
Regional performance points, which are applied to the yearlong North and South Regional Player of the Year races, are awarded to the top 30 finishers and ties. In addition, the top three finishers and ties in each event, as well as low mid-master, will earn exemptions into this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US to be held Sept. 5-7 on the Cypress Creek Course at Champions Golf Club in Houston.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted on the TGA website no later than March 18. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Tanglewood Resort and Flying L Ranch Resort & Golf Course.
At last year’s North Regional Mid-Amateur, hosted by The Courses at Watters Creek in Plano, Chris Wheeler of Addison bested the field with rounds of 72-71-69. His 4-under-par 212 was good for a three-stroke margin of victory over four-time champion Rob Couture of Celina. Wheeler, who captured his third overall TGA title at Watters Creek, was also low mid-master. Nathan Sheen of Alvin posted a 54-hole total of 7-under 209 at South Shore Harbour Country Club in League City to finish four shots ahead of the field at the 2024 South Regional Mid-Amateur. John Hunter of The Woodlands finished at 3-under 213 to claim second place, as well as low mid-master honors.
