Quarterfinals are set after Match Day 1 at the 104th Women’s Texas Amateur
CORPUS CHRISTI — The opening day of match play at the 104th Women’s Texas Amateur ended with a shakeup, as none of the top five seeds advanced at Corpus Christi Country Club. In a day filled with upsets, extended battles and dramatic finishes, the quarterfinal field is officially set.
Corpus Christi Country Club welcomed back some of the top women’s amateur golfers in Texas to begin the road to the championship match. It didn’t take long for upsets and extra-hole drama to take center stage.
The first upset came when London Fowlkes of Porter knocked off No. 1 seed Isabel Emanuels of Austin. Fowlkes caught fire on the back nine and closed out the match with a 4 & 3 victory.
Shortly after, Amelia Guo of Seabrook delivered another stunner, defeating second-seeded Breanna Hoese of Austin in 19 holes. Guo, who secured her spot in match play through a playoff in stroke play qualifying, leaned on her determination to pull off the upset.
In one of the most dramatic matches of the day, Shannon Fish of Spring outlasted Emma Von Hoffman of Austin in 22 holes. Fish, the only mid-amateur left in the championship flight, credited her love for competition—and her perspective as a mom—for keeping her grounded during the marathon match.
“I look at golf a lot differently than before I became a mom,” Fish said. “Golf is just really fun for our family now. This tournament hasn’t been nearly as stressful as when I was competing full time, and I’m just out here having a bunch of fun.”
The afternoon Round of 16 brought more tight battles and standout performances.
Sixteenth seed Lauren Nguyen of Houston defeated Fowlkes, 3 & 2, to set up a quarterfinal clash with 99th Women’s Texas Amateur champion Bentley Cotton of Austin. Cotton advanced after a commanding 5 & 6 victory over 102nd Women’s Texas Amateur runner-up Sydney Givens.
Tillie Claggett of Spring, coming off a semifinal finish at the Women’s Amateur Championship in Scotland, kept her momentum rolling with a dominant 7 & 6 win over Camryn Kiser of Seabrook. Claggett will face Grace Kalina of Frisco, a future Georgia State University golfer, in the quarterfinals.
Guo continued her resilient play, grinding out a 22-hole victory over Ryann Honea of San Angelo to book her spot in the quarterfinals.
“Coming into today after that playoff (in stroke play qualifying), I just had the mindset of having nothing to lose,” Guo said. “I went out there and played my own game.”
Guo will square off with Fish, who secured her place in the quarterfinals after defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Samantha Gibbs.
Mia Nixon of Martins Mill will represent Texas A&M in the quarterfinals after knocking off No. 3 seed and fellow SEC player Raleygh Simpson. Nixon will face defending champion Grace Jin of Huntsville, who defeated Alise Knudson of Dallas, 4 & 3, to reach her second consecutive quarterfinal as she aims to repeat as champion.
The official yardage for Match Day 1 was 6,121 yards.
Match Day 2 begins Wednesday, June 26, at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 tee, with quarterfinal matches followed by the semifinals in the afternoon.
