
Myers, Zhuang, Babb, and Murphy Lead after the First Round of the Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship
Briefly: Madden Myers of Amarillo leads the Boys Division of the Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship after shooting a solid 4-under par 67 at Golf Club at Texas A&M. Myers had 5 birdies against one bogey for the day, to secure a one-shot lead heading into the final round.
Cole Murphy of Gunter and Jacob Babb of Mansfield share the Boys 14 & Under Division lead at 3-under par 68. Both recorded four birdies and one bogey to take a share of the lead into Tuesday morning’s final round.
Jacqueline Zhuang of Dallas leads the Girls Division at 2-over par 73 after a strong even-par back nine. Zhuang leads by one shot going into the final round.
In Contention: In the Boys Division, College Station’s Ryan Lee, Austin’s Charlie Poe, and Andrew’s Joe Barnes all sit at 3-under 68, one off the lead, with Austin’s Thomas Ashy and Lucas’s Kaleb Orshalick close behind at 2-under 69, setting up a competitive final round.
In the Girls Division, Austin’s Ava Frazier sits in second place at 3-over par 74, one stroke behind Zhuang. Katy’s Lora Kim, Austin’s Tiffany Wong, and Austin’s Emmy Yang, are all tied at third with 5-over par 76.
In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Leander’s Trevor Lane shot a 2-under back nine to finish at 1-under par 70, behind co-leaders Murphy and Babb at 3-under. Fort Woth’s William Cothran and Austin’s Jaxon Osborne trail behind at 1-over par 73.
Host Club: Opened in 1951, Golf Club of Texas A&M serves as the university’s campus course. Designed by Ralph Plummer, known for his work at Colonial Country Club, Champions Golf Club, and Dallas Athletic Club, the course has been a fixture in College Station for over 60 years. A comprehensive renovation by Texas A&M alum Jeff Blume in 2013 enhanced the course, which now spans just over 7,000 yards and poses challenges for even elite golfers.
Weather: The weather for Monday morning’s first round started under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 70’s. In the afternoon the temperature reached 96 degrees, with 10-20 mph south wind gusts.
Tournament Format: The Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship is a 36-hole stroke play event for players 12-18 years old. All players in the field are required to have an active membership with the Texas Junior Golf Alliance.
About the LJT: The Legends Junior Tour is part of the Texas Junior Golf Alliance, which is a joint venture between the Texas Golf Association, Northern and Southern Texas PGA sections. The Tour operates as part of the Texas Golf Association and its Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. Tournament Exemptions: In the Boys Division, the champion will receive an exemption into the Hannon – Fields Invitational, Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational, 2027 Bluebonnet Championship, 2027 Byron Nelson Jr Championship, while the top 3 will earn a spot in the 101st Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf. In the Girls Division, the Champion will receive an exemption into the Hannon- Fields Junior Invitational, Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational, 2027 Texas Girls Invitational and 2027 Bluebonnet Championship. The champion of the Boys 14 and Under division will earn exemptions into the Hannon Fields Junior Invitational, Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational and 2027 Bluebonnet Championship and 101st Texas Junior Amateur.
