Moving Day Momentum: Boatner takes the lead in Round 2 of the 42nd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US

Logan Boatner of Humble separated himself from the field at the 42nd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US. The Humble resident fired a bogey-free 5-under 66 on Saturday, moving to 8-under overall and seizing a two-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round at Champions Golf Club.

Boatner’s second round was a model of control and patience. He rolled in birdies at Nos. 2, 5, 12, 15 and 17, never once giving a stroke back.

“Today was good and steady,” Boatner said. “I went bogey-free and I think I hit 17 greens in regulation, so I was just giving myself a lot of opportunities. The course played a lot differently today with the north wind, so staying patient was the key.”

With two consistent rounds behind him, Boatner said his focus will be on sticking to the formula that has carried him this far.

“My type of game is just a lot of fairways and greens,” he said. “With the north wind, you have longer clubs into some holes, but giving yourself looks plays well. Hopefully, we can keep it going tomorrow.”

If Boatner can hold off the chasers, he’ll capture his first Texas Golf Association title.

Chasing him is Robert Gwin of Montgomery, who sits in solo second at 6-under after a grinding 1-under 70. His round got off to a rocky start with a double bogey on No. 10, but the two-time South Four-Ball champion rallied with three birdies in his last five holes.

“Man, I struggled a little bit today,” Gwin admitted. “But I finished well with three birdies in the last five holes. The wind switched out of the north, so a couple holes played different. I wasn’t in the fairway much early, but I finally figured out my driver toward the end and was able to finish strong.”

Three shots back at 5-under are Brad Mason of Dallas and Austin Jordan of Nemo.

Mason was the biggest mover of the day, soaring 24 spots up the leaderboard with a blistering 6-under 65. The 2025 North Mid-Amateur champion relied on precision off the tee to navigate Champions’ tricky doglegs.

“It was obviously a solid round,” Mason said with a laugh. “I just did a really good job of keeping it in the fairway. There are a lot of doglegs both ways on this course, and I just kept it on the right side all day. Even if I missed, I was in the rough with an angle, which allowed me to attack pins.”

Looking ahead to the final round, Mason said staying patient will be critical. “There’s a lot of golf left. I’m within three shots, so I just need to take what the course gives me. Anything can happen in these events.”

Tied for fifth at 4-under are Houston’s Justin Kaplan, a Champions Golf Club member who led after Round 1, and 2023 champion Kendrick Vinar.

Alan Ferries of Spring and Kade Stewart of Tomball are tied for seventh at 3-under, while five players share a tie for 9th at 2-under: Nickolas Martinez of Cypress; Matthew Henson of Austin; Tom Moore of San Antonio; 2025 Mid-Amateur Match Play and 2025 Texas Four-Ball champion Chris Wheeler of Lewisville; and Jacob Davis of Kingsbury.

Saturday brought plenty of challenges for the 42nd Mid-Amateur field. Early groups teed off in calm, 80-degree weather, but conditions shifted as the day went on. By midday, temperatures climbed into the high 80s with overcast skies, and the north wind began to pick up, reaching gusts of 13 mph. Rain threatened in the afternoon but never materialized, leaving players to battle a firming golf course that demanded precision.

At the close of Round 2, the cut was made at 7-over 149 with 56 players advancing to Sunday’s final round.

The official yardage of the second round was 7,114 yards.
