McLaughlin and No Win 14 & Under Divisions of 100th Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf Shops
Beckett McLaughlin of Austin and Jianne No of Dallas win the Boys and Girls 14 & Under Divisions of the 100th Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf Shops at Stonebriar Country Club’s Fazio Course. The 14 & under Divisions competed over 36 holes.
McLaughlin finished at 3-under-par and was tied with Mansfield’s Jacob Babb in the Boys 14 & Under Division. The two players headed into a sudden-death playoff, starting on the No. 1 tee on the Fazio Course.
Both players hit the green in regulation on the downhill par-4 and two-putted for par. They both found the fairway on the par-4 second. Babb hit his second shot into the penalty area short of the green, while McLaughlin found the green in regulation. Babb was unable to get up and down after taking relief and McLaughlin two-putted for par and secured the victory.
No got off to a hot start in the second round, making four straight birdies on holes three through six, as she would go on to win by seven strokes in the Girls 14 & Under Division. No finished the week with 12 birdies in 36 holes.
Behind No was Frisco’s Ani Cooper in second and Allen’s Lily Hoang in third.
McLaughlin and No join a strong list of past champions from the 14 & Under Divisions including Jordan Spieth, Courtney Dow, Kaitlynn Papp, Parker Coody and Gaven Lane.
In the Boys Division, Lakeway’s Mackey Beckett leads after rounds of 71-69 to get to 4-under-par. Beckett started his second round on fire, making four birdies in his first five holes to get to 3-under. He made birdie on the par-4 ninth to get to 4-under and played his final nine holes on the Dye Course even to get into the clubhouse with the lead.
Trailing Beckett is a trio of players at 2-under including Aiden Tiet of Richardson, Kaden Frierson of Austin and Isaiah Diaz of Del Rio. Frierson posted the lowest round of the week with his 4-under 68, going bogey free to move up 15 spots on the leaderboard. Tiet shot 3-under 69 on Tuesday, while Diaz shot 1-under 71.
Brayden Verret of Farmers Branch sits in fifth place at 1-under, while Aadi Parmar of Selma is in sixth place at even-par heading into the final round.
In the Girls Division, Lois Lee of Flower Mound leads at 6-under-par. Her rounds of 70-68 on the Fazio Course have secured her a five-stroke lead in the Division. Lee’s highlight came on the par-4 16th when she made eagle. She rolled in a birdie on the 18th to extend her lead.
Veronika Germain of Houston, Eileen Lee of Plano and Dixie Mae Crain of Spring Town are tied for second in the division at 1-under. Quinn Timmerman of Boerne and Jacqueline Zhuang of Dallas are both tied for fifth at even-par.
Stonebriar Country Club is hosting the Texas Junior Amateur for the first time in the event’s history. The Fazio Course played host to the Boys and Girls 14 & Under Divisions as well as the Girls Division. The Dye Course is hosting the Boys Division.
The official yardage for Round 2 on the Dye Course for the Boys Division was 6,932 yards. On the Fazio Course, the Girls Division played 5,910 yards, the Boys 14 & Under Division played 6,587 yards and the Girls 14 & Under Division played 5,384 yards.
The winds remained steady throughout Round 2, averaging 15 miles per hour and gusting upwards of 22 miles per hour. The temperatures reached 99 degrees in Frisco, providing an additional test to the field.
The fields of the Boys and Girls Divisions were cut heading into the final round. The two divisions battle over 54 holes. The Texas Junior Amateur is a USGA Exemption Event with the champion of the Boys Division earning an exemption into the U.S. Junior Amateur and the champion of the Girls Division earning an exemption into the U.S. Girls’ Junior.
Round 3 of the 100th Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf Shops commences July 1 at 8:00 a.m. off No. 1 on both the Dye and Fazio courses. To view results from the first two days, click here.
