Martin and Sinz Win at Collegiate Preview
GEORGETOWN – Garrett Martin of San Antonio won the Boys Division of the Collegiate Preview after shooting 1-under 71 on Tuesday. Katy’s Elina Sinz defended her 2017 win in the Girls Division at Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club.
The Collegiate Preview is a 54-hole event for players that are 14 years and older and have a current membership with the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. Players played 36 holes on Monday after an 8:30 am shotgun start, followed by 18 holes Tuesday. The event is modeled after a college-style event and prepares kids for competing at the next level.
Martin fired the lone round under par on Tuesday to get to 4-under 212 overall for the tournament. The Texas Tech commit started his day off hot on the front side, making birdie on three of his first four holes. A bogey on No. 6 was his first blemish of the day, but he went out in 2-under 34 on the tough Jack Nicklaus designed course.
A double-bogey on No. 10 dropped him back to even on the day, but Martin bounced back with a birdie on the 507-yard 11th hole. He added another birdie on No. 15 for good measure and played the two par 5s on the back side in 6-under on the week.
League City’s Christian Hernandez finished second in the Boys Division after shooting consistent rounds of 73-73-75. His 221-overall total was aided by seven birdies in three rounds along with 38 pars to finish 5-over after 54 holes.
Caleb Hicks of Arlington finished third in the Boys Division at 224 overall, while Tucker Allen of Granbury finished fourth at 225 overall and Dawson Ovard of Frisco finished fifth at 227 overall.
Trey Bosco finished sixth, Andre Jacobs and Christopher McDonald tied for seventh, Niko Nebout finished ninth and Matthew Spaulding tied with Forrest Park for 10th in the division.
Sinz posted rounds of 80-77-79 to get to 236 overall and four strokes ahead of the field. She made 15 pars in her final round and won her second Collegiate Preview in as many years after winning at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, Texas last year.
Houston’s Zoe Slaughter finished runner-up in the Girls Division at 240 overall. Slaughter held the lead after the first two rounds and has finished in the top five of all four Legends Junior Tour events in 2018.
Madison Freeman finished third in the Girls Division, while Lauren May and Delaney Martin tied for fourth.
Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club is hosting the Collegiate Preview for the first time. Cimarron Hills was designed by Jack Nicklaus and the hill country layout features firm greens and soft bunkers. The LJT returned to Cimarron Hills for the first time since the 2011 Match Play Championship.
The Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic is the next event up on the LJT schedule. The event heads to The Hills Country Club’s Live Oak Course on March 15-16.
