March was a defining month for championship golf across Texas, as the Texas Golf Association launched into the heart of its competitive calendar with two regional events that set the stage for the season ahead. Two men’s regional championships featured deep, talented fields and tested players with demanding course setups, while the 27th Women’s Partnership Match Play added another strong chapter in the continued rise of competitive women’s golf in the state.

Beyond the leaderboards, these events served as early proving grounds—where players sharpened their games, established momentum, and positioned themselves for upcoming championship opportunities. From standout individual performances to tightly contested finishes, each tournament offered a glimpse of the form, focus, and resilience that will define the road to this year’s major titles.

Regional Mid-Amateurs

North Mid-Amateur:

  • Champion: Adam Valickus | -12
  • Low Mid-Master Recognition (Players age 40 years of age or older): Andrew Lawson | -10

For the first time in its history, the North Mid-Amateur was played at Cleburne Golf Links, where a deep field of mid-amateurs competed for a championship title, valuable exemptions and a place among the Texas Golf Association’s top amateur players.

Fort Worth’s Valickus emerged as the champion, delivering a steady and impressive performance over three rounds. He posted scores of 70-68-66 to finish at 12-under-par, securing a two-shot victory and his first Texas Golf Association regional title. Valickus separated himself with a strong closing round, maintaining control down the stretch as the leaderboard tightened.

Dallas’ Lawson finished runner-up at 10-under-par, earning Mid-Master honors with rounds of 68-68-69. Valickus and Lawson were the only players in the field to post under-par scores in all three rounds, a testament to their consistency throughout the tournament.

Three players — Mason Aldredge of Lindale, Gray Rodgers of Dallas and Brock Mulder of McKinney — tied for third at 7-under 209. Their performances added depth to a competitive leaderboard and underscored the strength of the field.

With their top-three finishes, Aldredge, Rodgers and Mulder each earned exemptions into the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur, set for October at Wichita Falls Country Club, joining Valickus and Lawson.

From the opening tee shot to the final putt, the North Mid-Amateur at Cleburne Golf Links highlighted the depth, consistency and competitive drive of Texas’ mid-amateur players, marking a notable chapter in the tournament’s history.

North Mid-Amateur Results

South Mid-Amateur:

  • Champion: Coy Dobson | -8
  • Low Mid-Master Recognition (Players age 40 years of age or older): Casey Carnes | Even Par

For the first time, the South Mid-Amateur was contested at Forest Creek Golf Club, as the Texas Golf Association continued its championship season with a strong and experienced field. Several past champions returned to compete, but it was a first-time regional winner who ultimately claimed the title.

Austin’s Dobson rose to the occasion, putting together three consecutive under-par rounds to deliver a commanding performance. With rounds of 70-69-69, he finished at 8-under-par 208, securing a five-shot victory and his first Texas Golf Association regional championship. Dobson’s consistency throughout the event proved decisive, as he steadily separated himself from the field.

Finishing tied for second were San Antonio’s John Beringer and Austin’s Josh Goldstein, both at 3-under-par 213. Their strong play across three rounds allowed them to pull away from the rest of the field and secure key top-three finishes in a competitive championship.

Just behind them was former West Texas Amateur champion Carnes, who finished at even-par 216 and earned Mid-Master honors, adding another accolade to his amateur résumé. Rounding out the top five was Matthew Henson of Spicewood, who finished at 1-over-par and represented the host club with a solid performance.

With their top-three finishes, Dobson, Beringer and Goldstein earned exemptions into the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur, set for October at Wichita Falls Country Club.

Regional Senior Amateurs

North Senior Amateur:

  • Senior Champion: John Derrick | +2

John Derrick of Waco showcased remarkable consistency at Luna Vista Golf Course, leading from start to finish to secure the Senior Division title at the North Senior Amateur. After setting the pace with an even-par 72 in the opening round, Derrick navigated a challenging final day to post a 74, finishing with a two-day total of 2-over-par 146. His steady play allowed him to maintain a two-stroke cushion over the rest of the field as the conditions tested the leaders.

The battle for the runner-up spot was a tight affair, highlighted by David Johnson of Trophy Club, who turned in the division’s low round of the day with a 1-over 73. Johnson’s late surge moved him up three spots into a tie for second place at 4-over-par with Gary Mahanay of McKinney, who remained consistent with back-to-back rounds of 74. Further down the leaderboard, Dallas native Kenneth Coutant claimed fourth place at 10-over, while the story of the afternoon belonged to John Schaefer of Plano. Schaefer engineered a massive turnaround, firing a final-round 75 to leapfrog 20 competitors and land in a three-way tie for fifth at 11-over alongside John Donahue and John Stollenwerck.

Richardson’s Michael Jones claimed the Super Senior Division title at Luna Vista Golf Course, finishing with a total of 5-over-par 149. Jones established his lead early with an opening-round 72 and held on during the final day to secure a two-shot victory. Behind him, the leaderboard saw a four-way logjam for second place at 7-over-par. Dallas local Sam Manning highlighted that chase, matching the low round of the tournament with a final-day 72 to jump nine spots. Manning shared the runner-up position with Scott Haynie of Wichita Falls, Weatherford’s Tom Takes, and Randall Conn of Trophy Club.

North Senior Amateur Results

South Mid-Amateur:

  • Senior Champion: Tray Tyner| -6
  • Super Senior Division: Greg Galasso | –3

Tray Tyner of Kerrville delivered a stellar performance at Lakecliff Golf Club to claim the Senior Division title at the South Senior Amateur, finishing the tournament with a total of 6-under-par 136. Tyner trailed after the first day but surged into the winner’s circle with a final-round 67, matching the low score of the afternoon. His consistent ball-striking and aggressive play Tyner has won the title.

Andrew Whitacre of The Woodlands mirrored Tyner’s final-day 67 to climb two spots and finish in solo second place at 4-under-par total. The day’s most dramatic movement came from Houston’s Andy Hydorn, who vaulted 17 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for third after firing a tournament-best 6-under-par 66. Hydorn shared the third-place position with Bill Skorheim of Spring, who finished at 2-under. The leaderboard remained crowded at the even-par mark, where a group of five players—including John Diamond, Bobby Baugh, David Ortego, Mike McCaffrey, and Bill Odom—finished in a tie for fifth to round out the top of the division.

Greg Galasso of Dripping Springs captured the Super Senior Division title at the South Senior Amateur, finishing the 36-hole championship at Lakecliff Golf Club with a total of 3-under-par 139. Galasso surged into the lead during the final round, carding a steady 70 to overtake first-round leader Bob Kearney. Brad Greebon of San Marcos delivered the round of the tournament on the final day, firing a 5-under-par 67 to climb three spots into a solo second-place finish at 1-under total. Kearney, who opened with a tournament-low 68, ultimately finished third at even-par after a closing 74. Georgetown’s Kevin Dahl and Spring’s Terry Childs rounded out the top of the leaderboard, finishing in a tie for fourth place at 2-over-par for the event.

South Senior Amateur Results

27th Women’s Partnership Match Play

In the 27th Women’s Partnership Match Play, Flight 1 featured a competitive group of teams, but it was Montgomery’s Lynda Kay and Sherry Fox who set the pace from start to finish.

Kay and Fox delivered a consistent performance across all five rounds, finishing with 55 points and secure the Flight 1 title. Their steady play and ability to produce in key moments allowed them to separate from the field and claim the top spot.

Tying for second at 46 points were Amy Gillespie and Lee Ann Penick of Austin and Houston, along with Kristin Hawk of Heath and Linda Light of Fort Worth. Both teams remained within striking distance throughout the competition, turning in solid rounds to stay among the leaders.

Kim Cure of Wichita Falls and Marian Barker of Lubbock, along with Karen Veriato of New Braunfels and Patthawan Livingston of San Marcos, shared fourth place with 42 points. Each duo showed flashes of strong play, contributing to a tightly contested leaderboard.

Rounding out the flight were Jennifer Lazar of Frisco and Maggie Mignone of Heath, who finished with 39 points.

From the opening round through the final matches, Flight 1 showcased depth and consistency, with Kay and Fox ultimately rising above a strong field to capture the title.

Flight 2 produced another strong showing, as San Antonio’s Kimi Guidry and Universal City’s Nanette Hall emerged as the top team.

Guidry and Hall turned in a steady performance across five rounds, posting scores of to finish with 52 points and secure the Flight 2 title. Their consistency throughout the competition allowed them to maintain control and pull away late.

Flight 3 of the 27th Women’s Partnership Match Play featured one of the strongest performances of the competition, as McKinney’s Amy Goodwin and Risa Tyo claimed the title.

Goodwin and Tyo put together an impressive five-round total, posting scores of 12-10-12-15-8 to finish with 57 points. A standout fourth-round performance helped separate them from the field, as they maintained control to secure the Flight 3 victory.

From start to finish, Flight 3 showcased high-level play and momentum swings, with Goodwin and Tyo ultimately rising above the field with a standout performance.

In Flight 4, the Dallas-based duo of An Gibson and Hoa Shelmire claimed the top spot with a commanding total of 60.00 points. The pair saved their best for last, firing a massive 15.00 points in the final round to pull away from the field.

They finished six points ahead of runners-up Elise Storaune and Kerry Carter-Taylor (54.00 points), who put up a valiant effort with a strong 14.00-point performance in Round 4 but couldn’t match the winners’ late-round surge.

The team of Donna Hernandez and Jordan Olson, representing Hickory Creek and Denton, took home the Flight 5 title with 57.00 total points.

Hernandez and Olson built a significant cushion early in the tournament, posting back-to-back 13.00-point rounds to start the event. Despite a slight stumble in the third round, they bounced back with a 14.00 in the fourth to solidify their lead over Michelle Frymire and Missy Dours, who finished second with 50.00 points.

Flight 6 featured another tight race of the group, with Donna Hart and Sherri Elliott of Corinth capturing first place with 59.00 points.

The pair displayed remarkable consistency, never scoring lower than 10.00 points in any single round. That steady hand allowed them to hold off a late charge by Connie David and Stacy Rehm, who finished second with 54.00 points, and the team of Kay Beard and Sharon Cole, who took third just one point behind with 53.00.
