Lone Star State’s Best head to the Coast for the 104th Women’s Texas Amateur
ADDISON – The 104th Women’s Texas Amateur heads to Corpus Christi Country Club from June 24-27, marking the first women’s major championship on the 2025 calendar.
“It is great to be heading back to such a phenomenal site,” said Texas Golf Association Director of Women’s Golf Kristi Knight. “Corpus Christi Country Club and the TGA have a great relationship, and we are excited to bring a major championship back to the club.”
Corpus Christi Country Club has hosted the Women’s Texas Amateur three times: in 1947 (won by Kay Pearson), 1959 (Sandra Haynie), and 1970 (Martha Palmer). The club will now host the championship for a fourth time and crown a new champion, looking to add their name to the elite list of past champions.
One of the oldest clubs in Texas, Corpus Christi Country Club opened in 1909 as a nine-hole course designed by Fred McLeod. President William Howard Taft hit the inaugural tee shot. In 1919, the Florida Keys hurricane wiped out the course. The club reestablished itself in 1921 and officially reopened in 1922 with a nine-hole layout designed by John Bredmus.
In 1935, the course expanded to 18 holes. The club also added a swimming pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. Corpus Christi Country Club welcomed famous names over the years, including Byron Nelson, who won the Corpus Christi Open in 1945.
In 1963, the club moved to its current site on Everhart Road. The new course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Over the decades, the club has hosted prestigious events for the Texas PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Ben Hogan Tour, Tight Lies Tour and the Texas Golf Association.
In 2022, Chet Williams was selected to modernize the course, adding variety to the layout while preserving the coastal plain’s character.
“There is such rich history with this club,” Knight said. “To combine a historic tournament with a historic club just adds to the atmosphere of the event.”
The 104th Women’s Texas Amateur marks the second consecutive year the event is an official USGA exemption event, with the champion earning a spot in the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bandon Dunes Golf Club.
At the 103rd Women’s Texas Amateur, hosted by Spanish Oaks Golf Club, Grace Jin of Huntsville captured the title. The SMU golfer defeated two-time Women’s Texas Amateur champion Emma McMyler 1 up. Jin earned an exemption into the 124th U.S. Women’s Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club, where she qualified for match play and reached the Round of 32.
Stoke play will commence on July 24 for all players. After stroke play, the top 32 players will advance to the championship flight. The remaining players will compete in eight flights of eight in single elimination. The championship matches from each flight will commence on June 27.
Following stroke play, the event shifts to single-elimination match play. Winners advance, while defeated players are eliminated. By week’s end, the overall champion and eight flight winners will be crowned.
