Lee Sandlin Leads at the North Senior Amateur
The North Senior Amateur got underway today at Texas Star Golf
Course in Euless. The field of 78 was split into two divisions with 60 players in
the Senior division (55 years and older) and 18 players in the Super Senior
division (65 years and older).
Players were met with warm temperatures, but strong 25+ mph winds
that lasted throughout the day. . Lee Sandlin got off to a great start shooting a solid 74. Sandlin’s 4 birdies to go with 6 bogeys were enough to take the first round lead in the Senior division. Mike
Peck finished the day in 2nd place after posting a 75. Three others are tied for 3rd at 76 in what turned out to be a closely bunched field.
The Super Senior division had a four way tie for 1st
after day one. Jim Koehnk, Art Hull, Paul Nuckolls, and Michael Hastings each
posted solid rounds of 79 putting them all in contention and in a prime spot to
make a run at the title tomorrow. Jimmy Caldwell is also right in the mix after
firing an 80 on the par 71.
Defending champion John Grace was thought to be the leader in the clubhouse with a 73. Once he arrived at home, John realized that he had not included a penalty stroke in the score of his last hole and called the TGA to inform them of the mistake which resulted in a disqualification under rule 6-6d of the Rules of Golf. John’s actions are the perfect example of the honesty and integrity that the game of golf was meant to portray.
Round 2 will get underway Wednesday morning at 8:00am. Tee times can be found at www.txga.org.
