Lee and Case Capture Collegiate Preview Title

Briefly: Both of our leaders after 36 holes went wire to wire to win their respective divisions at the Collegiate Preview. Kingwood’s Corrington Case followed his rounds yesterday with a 2-under 69 today to finish atop the boys division. Eileen Lee, of Plano, finished her tournament with a 3-over 74, clinching the win in the girls division by five shots.

Tournament Leaderboard

Winners: Corrington Case began play today with only one bogey in his first 36 holes. That changed rather quickly after he bogeyed his first hole of the day, but of course, a birdie on the second hole settled him down. He attributed the win to his short game. “All three rounds, my short game was on point, and those six-footers fell. I think that’s why I didn’t make a lot of bogeys,” he told us afterward. Corrington was very fond of the course’s conditions as well, saying, “Chipping on (this grass) felt well, putting on it felt well. The greens are in great shape, and this course is great”. Corrington would go on to birdie holes 6 and 7 to give himself a bit of a cushion at the top of the leaderboard, and made par on every hole after that, cruising to victory in the boys division.

Eileen Lee also began her day with a rocky start after a triple bogey on her first hole. Coming into today, Lee held a four-shot lead. In fifteen minutes, that dropped to just one. “I started off with a triple on the first hole, and I kind of struggled with my putting early on,” she said. “But I was able to keep focused and be patient with myself and I was able to make some at the end”. Eileen said her distance control with her irons kept her in the lead, saying she was able to get lots of shots “as close as possible”. Three birdies in her last five holes provided her a smooth finish enroute to winning the girls division.

Top Finishers: Matthew Lewis and Jacob Baker both posted three rounds of 67, 70, and 72 to finish at 4-under in a tie for second place. Wichita Falls’ own, Austin McCollum, rounds out the top four after a final round 74 to finish at 2-under. In the girls division, Aubrie Nolen from Southlake shot 73 today to finalize her spot in solo second place. Gracie Kent finished in solo third after rounds of 75, 72, and 75 to finish at 9-over for the tournament.

Golf Course: Founded in 1914, Wichita Falls Country Club carries a rich history rooted in the city’s early development and ties to the oil boom. Originally established as Wichita Falls Golf Club with a nine-hole course, the club faced financial struggles during the Great Depression before being reorganized. A pivotal figure in its revival was Solon Featherston, who purchased the club and led significant improvements.  The club has hosted numerous TGA and USGA qualifiers, as well as notable TGA events including multiple Father-Son Championships, three Texas Amateurs, and the 1989 Texas Mid-Amateur. Wichita Falls Country Club is also set to host the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US in 2026.

Weather: Round 2 was resumed at 7:00am with temperatures in the high 60’s. As those players finished and the final round was underway, overcast skies and last night’s storms kept it cool throughout the morning, and temperatures never got past 85 degrees all day. Calm conditions allowed for a comfortable finish, as wind gusts peaked at only 8 miles per hour.
