Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship Set for July 27-28

ADDISON – The Legends Junior Tour will head to College Station for the 2026 Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship, the final event of the summer’s July slate, set for July 27-28 at the Golf Club at Texas A&M. 

“We are excited to be heading back to the Golf Club at Texas A&M,” said tournament manager Preston Vinzant. “We have held multiple events there in the past, and they have been a great host to showcase the talent of the Legends Junior Tour.” 

The Golf Club at Texas A&M traces its roots back to 1951, when the original Campus Course opened, designed by noted Texas architect Ralph Plummer. Over more than six decades, Plummer’s layout served generations of Aggies while joining an impressive portfolio that includes Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Champions Golf Club in Houston and Dallas Athletic Club. 

In 2013, the course underwent a complete transformation under the direction of Texas A&M alumnus Jeff Blume (’89). The renovation produced the current par-71, 7,008-yard championship layout, blending classic architectural influences with modern playability to create one of the premier collegiate golf facilities in the country. 

Blume, who launched his own design firm after working alongside renowned architect Robert von Hagge, has called the Texas A&M project one of the defining achievements of his career. Beyond returning to his alma mater, the opportunity allowed him to create a course that honors the university’s traditions while providing a championship-caliber test for players of all skill levels. 

The $5 million renovation was made possible through a partnership between Blume, Houston businessman Robert Steele, Sterling Golf and Texas A&M University. Along with the redesigned 18-hole course, the project introduced a state-of-the-art driving range and short-game practice facility that supports both player development and the university’s academic and research programs. 

Inspired by the timeless designs of early American golf architecture, Blume incorporated features reminiscent of legendary architects Charles Macdonald and Donald Ross. The course is highlighted by 158 strategically placed bunkers that give the layout both its distinctive look and its strategic bite. 

“We believe the Golf Club at Texas A&M will be another great test for the players in a key event on the schedule,” Vinzant said. “Players are looking to earn crucial points in the Player of the Year Points Race, presented by Huntington Bank, and to earn a spot in the coveted Jackie Burke Cup. It’s going to make for an exciting event. The event is also named after one of the most iconic golfers in Texas golf history, which adds even more energy to the week.” 

Lanny Wadkins enjoyed one of the most accomplished careers in professional golf, highlighted by 21 PGA Tour victories, including the 1977 PGA Championship and the 1979 Players Championship. A standout amateur, Wadkins won the 1970 U.S. Amateur Championship while attending Wake Forest University, where he earned All-America honors. He also represented the United States in eight Ryder Cups, compiling a 20-11-3 career record before being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. 

At the 2025 Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship, Daniel Ferguson, now a men’s golfer at Dallas Baptist University, closed out his LJT career with a victory, defeating Jake Knobler in a three-hole playoff to finish at 4-under 140 for the event. 

In the Girls Division, Madeline Buckley of Magnolia won the title with rounds of 71-73 to finish at even-par 144, taking the win by six strokes over the field. 

Reid Habermehl of Tyler won the Boys 14 & Under Division, carding rounds of 73-69 to finish at 2-under 142 for the event. 

The first round of the 2026 Lanny Wadkins Junior Championship will begin Monday, July 27, at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
