Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic heads to Riverhill Country Club
ADDISON – The Legends Junior Tour will visit Riverhill Country Club for the 2025 edition of the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic, the second event of the 2025 season, set to take place Feb. 1-2. For the first time since 2010, the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic returns to Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville. The Legends Junior Tour previously hosted the 2021 and 2022 Alamo Shootout at the course.
“We are excited to be heading back to this incredible course,” said Kevin Porter, Director of Competitions for North Texas. “We were here for this specific event back in 2010 and then the Alamo Shootout was held here for two years. We love the staff and are thankful to the club and its members for opening up their course for the best junior golfers in Texas and surrounding states.”
Riverhill Country Club is located in Kerrville, just over an hour northwest of San Antonio. Founded in the 1960s, the original golf course featured just nine holes. In the early 1970s, Lloyd Brinkman purchased the club and tasked a legendary figure in Texas golf with designing a course that would become one of the state’s best. Byron Nelson, a Texas Golf Hall of Famer, partnered with renowned golf course architect Joe Finger to create the layout.
Riverhill holds a special place in golf history. Nelson played his final round of golf there in 2004 at the age of 92. To this day, his locker remains in the men’s locker room, adding to the club’s storied legacy. In May 2024, Riverhill Country Club celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The 18-hole, par-72 course opened in 1975, stretching 6,800 yards from the back tees. While designed to accommodate everyday players, the course becomes a true challenge from the longer yardages. Featuring bentgrass greens and distinctive par-3 holes, it offers a memorable test for all golfers.
The tournament’s namesake, Jimmy Demaret, was born in Houston on May 24, 1910, and left an indelible mark on the sport. A three-time Masters champion and 31-time PGA Tour winner, Demaret’s 1947 season saw him earn the Vardon Trophy and lead the tour in earnings. Known as “The Wardrobe” for his flamboyant style, he co-founded the Senior Tour and the Champions Golf Club, which has hosted numerous major tournaments. A four-time Ryder Cup team member and a World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Demaret passed away in 1983, but his legacy continues to inspire.
At the 2024 Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic, held at Delaware Springs Golf Course, Sterling Hurd of Austin claimed the Boys 15-18 Division title for the third consecutive year. Hurd posted rounds of 68-78 for a total of 146 in challenging conditions, which included winds up to 25 mph and gusts of 40 mph. A hole-in-one on the Par-4 17th highlighted his performance during the final round. In the Boys 14 & Under Division, Austin’s JP Lynch secured his first title of the season with a score of 78-75 for a 153 total, winning by two strokes. San Antonio’s Lydia Portlock captured the Girls 12-18 Division with rounds of 70-76 for a 146 total, finishing three strokes ahead of the field.
The first round of the 2025 Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic will begin at 8 a.m. on Feb. 1, with players teeing off from both No. 1 and No. 10. To learn more information on Jimmy Demaret, click here. To learn more about the Jimmy Demaret Junior Classic, click here.
