Irving’s 67 Leads North Mid-Amateur by Four Shots
TROPHY CLUB — Joshua Irving shot an opening round 5-under-par 67 to take the overnight lead in the 2015 North Mid-Amateur Championship presented by UST Mamyia. Zach Atkinson and Brandon Scott trail by four shots headed into the second round at Trophy Club Country Club.
Irving, who hails from Fort Worth, got off to a quick start with back to back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. The 2014 North Mid-Amateur runner-up is four shots clear of the field. Irving recorded six birdies total and took advantage of the Par 5’s, playing them at three under par for the day. His lone bogey came on the most difficult hole, the Par 4, 7th.
Zach Atkinson of Colleyville and Brandon Scott of Justin, are tied in second with one under par, 71’s. Zack Atkinson has had success here before as he was the 2013 North Mid-Amateur champion at Trophy Club Country Club. Scott, who currently is the low Super Mid-Am, recorded two birdies on the day with one bogey to remain close with Irving.
This is the third time Trophy Club Country Club has played host to the North Regional Mid-Amateur with Zack Atkinson winning in 2013 and Aaron Hickman winning in 2011. The Hogan Course proved to be a tough test, as the average score was six shots over par. Only six people found themselves at even par or better after completion at the end of the first round.
Round 2 will once again begin off the 1st and 10th tee at 8:00am. Overnight leader, Joshua Irving will try to extend his lead going out at 9:12am off the first tee.
