Haymon Surges to Defend South Mid-Am Title

Katy – Defending champion Broc Haymon of Pearland on Sunday fired a final round 5-under-par 67 to win the 2018 South Mid-Am, presented by Impact Precision Golf, at The Club at Falcon Point. He finished the tournament at even par after shooting 74-75-67–216 overall. Haymon started the day five strokes behind 36-hole leader Ryan Clarke, who shot a final round 76 to finish in a tie for second place with Clint White.

Haymon started his final round with three pars before a birdie on number four put him in red numbers. He also birdied the par-4 eighth hole to finish his front nine at 2-under par. He also shot 2-under on his first nine holes on Saturday, but stumbled to the finish by shooting 5-over on his final five holes. That wouldn’t be the case again though.

“It’s a new day,” Haymon said of his mindset heading into the final round. “If I broke the front down into three three-hole segments and try to pick up a stroke on each segment, then I’d only be two back heading into the back nine.”

Haymon did that and more, picking up six strokes on the front nine to make the turn one stroke ahead of Clarke. Haymon added three more birdies on the back nine on his way to a bogey-free 67; helping him pull away from an otherwise crowded leaderboard.

“I felt like 67 was the worst I was going to play today,” said Haymon.

Clarke did enough on Sunday to hold off Mike Booker as the lowest Mid-Master with a 4-over-par 220 overall.

White matched Haymon with a tournament-low 67 on Sunday to make a late charge up the leaderboard. White recorded six birdies in his round, but a bogey on 18 dropped him into a tie with Haymon for the tournament-low score.
